Pinterest for Genealogy

Here is a great new use for the Pinterest.Com website for genealogists. Did you know you can pin images from Ancestry.com onto your Pinterest boards?  Just click the "pin it" tab and collect images on a board.  Then you can repin them to family group boards, biographies, or any other boards you set up.  Imagine the possiblities!

This idea came from fellow genealogy blogger and Londonderry resident, Timothy McQuaid (click here for a link to his blog Forgotten Journeys http://forgottenjourneys.blogspot.com ).  He contacted me just half an hour ago to ask for an invite to Pinterest.  He was wondering if he could capture the Ancestry source images.  I checked, and it was certainly possible.  I've been playing around with this idea ever since his message!

Here is a screenshot of one board with three census images:

What ideas do you have for these images from Ancestry?  What kinds of boards could you create for sharing genealogy information with friends and extended family?

  1. I ws perusing Pinterest and it stated that you have to be invited to join the site, is that so?

  2. I've never used Pinterest but now I'm intrigued. Do you "pin it" from ancestry? Or how exactly does that happen?

I may need an invitation. Sigh.

  3. How about a cemetery board. Instead of transcribing the head stone, take photos and and make a board.

  4. What a great ideal Heather! Thanks for sharing! I can see all kinds of possibilities. Great, now I'm going to have to create a whole new Pinterest account just for this LOL.

  6. Claudia, yes right now it is open to invitation only because it's not "official" yet. Message me your email address and I can send you an invitation.

  8. Heather:

I had no idea you could do that! Just another reason to spend even more time on Pinterest!

  9. Doesn't that violate Ancestry's terms of use? I don't think you're permitted to repost their images online... I know of several webmasters who were contacted by Ancestry's legal team for doing that.

  10. Does anyone know the answer to Illya's comment? If you are using Ancestry images on Pinterest is it a violation of their terms? Is it using it for personal use or something more? I often see Ancestry images on blogs, too...
