This is my favorite photograph of Queen Lili'uokalani. I snapped this photo of a photo inside Washington Place, the family home in Honolulu. It is the Queen, in her very last years, with her grandchildren. These are the children of John Owen Aimoku Dominis. Her third grandchild was born in 1916, and the Queen passed away in 1917. It was originally photographed in the garden of Washington Place.
The Queen's birthday is celebrated in Hawaii with a prayer service at Iolani Palace, and the Royal Mausoleum is opened for the public to pay their respects. Hula and mele (music) are usually performed in her honor, and often the music the Queen herself composed is played.
