Lili'uokalani's Birthday, September 2, 1838

This is my favorite photograph of Queen Lili'uokalani.  I snapped this photo of a photo inside Washington Place, the family home in Honolulu.  It is the Queen, in her very last years, with her grandchildren.  These are the children of John Owen Aimoku Dominis.  Her third grandchild was born in 1916, and the Queen passed away in 1917.  It was originally photographed in the garden of Washington Place.

The Queen's birthday is celebrated in Hawaii with a prayer service at Iolani Palace, and the Royal Mausoleum is opened for the public to pay their respects.   Hula and mele (music) are usually performed in her honor, and often the music the Queen herself composed is played.

Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaʻeha was born to her parents to High Chiefess Analea Keohokalole and High Chief Caesar Kaluaiku Kapa'akea on this day, 2 September 1838, . She was raised by her hanai (adoptive parents in the Hawaiian style) Abner Paki and Laura Konia. Her royal name, upon being named Crown Princess, was Lili'uokalani.

  3. What a marvelous tree you have, Heather. Your "roots" spread wide, from the Mayflower to Hawaii. Impressive.
