Surname Saturday - Follett of Salem, Massachusetts

FOLLETT

It is not known where Robert Follett was born, nor do we know the year.  He was married in 1655 in Salem to Persis Black. He was a fisherman and a farmer.  They joined the church in 1686.  He owned property, a house and a farm with 130 acres.  In 1703 he transferred his house and the lot to a grandson, William Herbert (son of Mary).   In 1704 he transferred his farm and acreage to his sons Isaac and Benjamin.   Not much more is known about Robert Follett.

There were other Folletts, probably unrelated, living in Dover, New Hampshire.  All these Folletts, including Robert of Salem, are outlined in the Genealogical Dictionary of New England, by James Savage, Volume II, page 178. The marriages of Robert and his sons are listed in Torrey’s New England Marriages, Volume I, page 557 and 558. There is a very brief sketch of Robert Follet and his family in The History of Salem, by Sidney Perley, Volume II, page 385.

There is a microform of The Descendants of John Follett, 1669-1718, Son of Robert of Salem by Katherine R. Follett at the New England Historic Genealogical Society call number CS71.F665 1985.   There is also a book that covers Robert Follett and some of his descendants called Branches of my Family Tree – The Follett Branch, by Helen Carpenter Burns, available to read online at FamilySearch.org in the Family History Books link, title number 739415.

  1. Hi Heather - Happy New Year! I am currently researching the Follett family in an effort to provide proof for my Mayflower Society application. I believe that Sarah "Sally" Follett (1766-1849) was the son of William Follett (aboug 1742-1834) and Rebecca Everet (1738-1816). Sarah married Isaac Doten, Sr.(1768-1852) and it's from them that I descend. However, finding proof of their marriage is proving a mystery. Thanks for some additional Follett family links for me to work with. Wish me luck.
