TRACY

Stephen Tracy was a Separatist living in Leiden, Holland with the other English religious refugees who became known as the “Pilgrims” of Plymouth, Massachusetts.  He worked in Leiden as a “sayworker” (one who weaves bedding and tablecloths).   On 2 January 1621 in Leiden he married his wife, Tryphosa Lee, another English woman. 

Stephen Tracy came to New England aboard the Ann, which arrived in Plymouth in late June 1623. His wife and eldest daughter, Sarah, arrived in Massachusetts in 1625 aboard the ship Jacob.  They settled in the town of Duxbury where Stephen was the constable.   Ralph and George Partridge were his neighbors.  

On 1 January 1632/3 he became a freeman.  He served on many committees for the town of Duxbury, and appears in many early records.   In the 1627 cattle division “Stephen Tracie, Triphosa Tracie, Sarah Tracie, Rebecka Tracie” were the fifth through eighth names on the list for the tenth company. 

Sometime in the 1640s Stephen Tracy returned to England.  He is not seen in any later Plymouth Colony records.   His will was proved on 20 March 1654/5 in London, leaving his land to his son, his cow and mare to his daughter Ruth, and his cattle “to be equally divided among my five children living in New England”.  It is unknown if his wife, Tryphosa, died in New England or England.

My Tracy Genealogy:

Generation 1:  Stephen Tracy, baptized 28 December 1596 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, son of Stephen Tracy and Agnes Erdley, died between 1652 and 1653 in England; married on 2 January 1621 in Leiden, Holland to Tryphosa Lee.  She is probably the daughter of Joos Lee and Anne Hungerford.  Five children.

Generation 2:  Sarah Tracy, born about 1623 in Leiden, Holland, died 16 November 1708 in Duxbury, Massachusetts; married 16 November 1638 in Plymouth, Massachusetts to George Partridge.  He was born about 1605 in England and died 7 July 1695 in Duxbury.  Ten children.
