Weathervane Wednesday ~ A Circus Performer!

Every Wednesday for more than two years Vincent and I have been posting photographs of weather vanes located in or near the Nutfield area (the former name for the land where Londonderry, Derry and Windham, New Hampshire are now located). Most are historically interesting or just whimsical and fun weather vanes. If you know an interesting weather vane, please send me an email or leave a comment below.

Today's weather vane was found at a museum in Vermont. Have fun guessing where you may have seen this weather vane.

Do you know the location of weather vane #141? Scroll down to see the answer....

This weather vane is part of the collection at the Stage Coach Inn Gallery at the Shelburne Museum.  The gallery specializes in ship figureheads, weather vanes, and advertising art such as cigar store Indians.  As you can probably guess, it is one of my favorite galleries of the many galleries at the Shelburne Museum.  The label for this weather vanes simply reads "Circus Equestrienne, 1875 - 1910".  It is made of copper, lead and has gold paint. It was acquired by Mrs. Webb from an the Thompson family in New Hampshire.

Electra Havemeyer Webb was an early collector of folk art.  She bought a cigar store Indian in Connecticut in 1908 when she was only 19 years old.  Folk art is displayed in several galleries at the Shelburne Museum, including the Stage Coach Inn, the Circus Building, the Variety Unit, The Brick House, and the Hat and Fragrance Textile Gallery.  The museum continues to collect folk art today.

  1. This one is amazing. I'm surprised at how many different themes there were for weather vanes.
