Tombstone Tuesday - Hannah (Eastman) Cotton, d. 1838, Derry, New Hampshire

This tombstone was photographed at the Forest Hill Cemetery in East Derry, New Hampshire.  It is very large, and the top right corner is cracked off the main stone.  It is now lying flat on the ground instead of upright on its base.

Let me go for songs seraphic

Now seem calling from the sky;

Tis the welcome of the angels

Which e'en now are hovering nigh;

Let me go, they wait to bear me

To the mansions of the blest;

Where the spirit worn and weary,

Finds at last its long sought rest

The epitaph above comes from the poem "Let me go" by William Baxter.  It can be found in its entirety in the journal "Christian Pioneer: A Monthly Magazine" edited by Joseph Foulkes Winks, Volume II, 1848, on page 30.   There is a copy viewable online at Google Books.

Hannah was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the daughter of Joseph6 Eastman (Ephraim5, Jeremiah4, Zachariah3, John2, Roger1 Eastman) and Sally Prescott.  She married Nathaniel Cotton and had six children - James Abraham, Alvah Nathaniel, Sarah Prescott, Catharine Augusta, Charles Henry and George Edward.  Hannah died at Derry, New Hampshire on 15 April 1838.

Above the pointing finger are the words
