Tombstone Tuesday ~ A Scots Irish Settler, and his son who died at Fort Ticonderoga

This tombstone was photographed at the Hillside Cemetery in Goffstown, New Hampshire.  It is one of the oldest tombstones in this cemetery.

Archibald McCurdy was born about 1684 in Northern Ireland, and died 8 February 1776 in New Hampshire.   He came to America in 1737 with three grown sons from his first marriage.  The three older sons were pressed into the British Navy when they arrived in Boston.   The names of both his wives are unknown.

Children:

From first marriage:
1. Robert McCurdy, born about 1713, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, died of Yellow Fever in Jamaica.  Never married.
2. Daniel McCurdy, born about 1715, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, died 28 March 1791 in Dunbarton, New Hampshire.  Never married.
3. John McCurdy, born about 1718, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, died 6 August 1813 in New Hampshire; married Mary Scoby.

From second marriage:
4.  James McCurdy,  1739 New Hampshire, died of small pox on 19 July 1776 at Fort Ticonderoga in Essex County, New York. 
5.  Sarah McCurdy, after 1739, New Hampshire

  1. Love your childhood memories. I grew up in a township with the only barn and we had a field in the back. Now it's changed so much for retail business. I have fond memories of sleepovers and just laying lazily in the yard. Great Photo.
