BATES
There is nothing about William Bates in vital records, or in
Pope’s Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire. In the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New
Hampshire, page 82, mentions William Bates bought land at New Castle, New
Hampshire from Elizabeth Fabes in 1704, and his two daughters Mary and Judith. No mention in Hollick’s New Englanders in the 1600s
or the Genealogical Dictionary of New England. Also, there is no mention of William Bates in
the New Hampshire State and Provincial Papers. No hits on the NEHGS database. Nothing!
I found lots of information online, but none with reliable
sources, about William Bates. My
favorite was a marriage with a wife named WALLIS. Where did this come from?*
William Bates is my 8th great grandfather. His daughter Mary is my 7th great
grandmother. Mary Bates married Jotham
Berry on 11 November 1731 in Rye, New Hampshire. The rest of this lineage is very straightforward,
with lots of sources for births, marriages and deaths. I’d love to know more about William, and his
ancestry.

Generation 1: William
Bates, born about 1675, died before 1731; married Unknown. Two daughters
Generation 2: Mary
Bates, born about 1712, married on 11 November 1731 in Rye, New Hampshire to
Jotham Berry as his first wife. He was
the son of Samuel Berry and Abigail Webster, born abut 1711 and died after 1790
(his second wife was Tryphene Philbrick, widow of John Saunders). Six children with Mary Bates.

Elmer Allen m. Gertrude Matilda Hitchings (my grandparents)
*UPDATE! At noon today I found a private message on Facebook from genealogist Nancy Riley referencing the History of the Town of Hampton, New Hampshire: From its settlement in 1638, to the autumn of 1892, Volume II, page 1047 "Marriages - William Beats and Mary Walles, September 10, 1702" - So this is the source for the marriage of William Bates to Mary Wallis! Thanks, Nancy!

ReplyDeleteThe marriage also appears in the later "Vital records of Hampton, New Hampshire to the end of the year 1900, Vol. 1 by George Freeman Sanborn Jr. and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, p. 58, the source given as Hampton Town Book Vol. 2 p. 334.

DeleteWilliam Berry was born 1610 in Norfolk, England, the son of Johan Berry. He was in service to Captain John Mason in 1631, when Mason sent 58 men and 22 women to the Piscataqua River in North America. Among them were William Berry.
ReplyDeleteCol. Samuel Partridge b. 1645 of Hartford, CT, married Mehitbale Crow. Col. Samuel Partridge son William Partridge married Mary Smith. Willam's sister was Margery Partridge Mason, wife of Thomas Mason, parents of Ebenezer Mason b. 1669.
Hannah Clark Mason was a daughter of Benjamin and Dorcas Morse Clark, sister of Jeremiah Morse b. 1651. Jeremiah Morse was a son of Joseph and Hannah Phillips Morse b. 1600. Hannah Phillips Morse's brother was Jonathan Phillips Sr. Jonathan Phillips Jr married Hepziah Parker, daughter of Ebenezer and Rebecca Newhall Parker. (Hepziah's sisters were Elizabeth Parker Rand and Sarah Parker Temple. ) Ebenezer Parker's father was Hanniah Parker brother of John Parker b. 1664. John Parker married Deliverance Dodge Parker, daughter of John and Sarah Porter Dodge. Deliverance's sister was Mary Dodge, who married John Trask and Christian Woodbury, brother of William Woodbury. William Woodbury was married to Hannah Haskell b. 1656. Hannah was a daughter of Roger and Elizabeth Hardy Haskell b. 1623. Elizabeth remarried Edward Berry b. 1610.
