Tombstone Tuesday ~ Samuel Treat, died 1756 in Wethersfield, Connecticut

This tombstone was photographed at the Ancient Burying Ground in Wethersfield, Connecticut.

In Memory of
MR. SAMUEL TREAT
Who Departed this
Life Febry 2nd 1756
In the 33rd year
of his Age.

The winged soul on this tombstone is missing a piece of his cheek.
Many of the red sandstone gravestones in this cemetery were broken
because the material is very soft and crumbly.

Samuel Treat was born 26 December 1723 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. He was the son of Samuel Treat and Sarah Wolcott.  He married Jerusha Andrews and had five children - Sarah, Wolcott, Samuel, Jerusha and Martha.  Samuel Treat was the great grandson of immigrant ancestors Richard Treat and Alice Gaylord.

Another Samuel Treat (1650 - 1717) was the grandson of settlers Richard Treat and Alice Gaylord.  He married Elizabeth Mayo, my 8th great aunt.  I descend from her sister, Mary Mayo who married Jonathan Bangs.

  1. More cousinly connections, Heather! Samuel Treat and Elizabeth Mayo are 10x great-grandparents of mine on my paternal side. On my maternal side, Sarah Mayo and her husband Jonathon Brooks are 8X ggs of mine, although I have not yet traced back to see how, or if, Sarah is related to Elizabeth Mayo,

    1. Hi Rob't! I don't have very many ancestors from Connecticut, but it was fun exploring Wethersfield, Windsor and Hartford for the few I have from this area.

  2. Heather - Richard Treat & Alice Gaylord are my 9x gr-grandparents! I am descended through their daughter, Joanna who married John Hollister. I have tons of ancestors who lived & died in the Wethersfield/Glastonbury area.
