Blessed are the dead who died in the name of the Lord
William Brown was born in Scotland about 1729, and died on
21 May 1809 in Chester, New Hampshire (now in the town of Hooksett near Suncook).
He was one of three brothers who came
from Scotland and settled in the northern part of Chester. The oldest was Samuel Brown, who married Jean
Gibson. The middle brother was Dr.
Joseph Brown who married Ann Otterson and lived near Head’s saw mill. William
was the youngest brother.
William’s wife was Ruth McDuffee, daughter of Daniel
McDuffee and Ruth Britton of Londonderry. She was born 1 February 1730 in Londonderry
and died 6 November 1807. William signed the association test for the town of
Chester, and served in the Revolutionary War under Captain Stephen Dearborn. They had seven children:

2. Molly m. Ezra Abbott
3. Ruth (1765 – 1848)
4. James (1768 – 1840) m . Molly McCurdy
5. Sarah
6. John (1771 – 1826) m. Polly Gault
7. William m. Sally Benton

William Brown's gravestone was cut by Nathan Farley, a stone carver from Concord, New Hampshire.
