Windham, New Hampshire Celebrates Nutfield's 300th Anniversary

Flax demonstrations at the Strawberry Festival

This weekend Windham, New Hampshire is celebrating the 300th anniversary of Nutfield at their annual Strawberry Festival.  This three day event started yesterday on the Town Common with the opening of the 275th anniversary Time Capsule.  A cannon was fired by the New Hampshire First Regiment.

Today at Windham High School the Windham residents celebrated the Strawberry Festival with food, music, games, strawberry shortcakes, and a book sale.  The historical society hosted demonstrations of pottery making, historic flax processing (thank you to our Scots Irish forebears!), and beeswax candlemaking.  There were free giveaways of historic maps of Windham, 275th Programs, a 1718 booklet, and the history of Windham Rural Oasis. The Nutfield 300th Medal was available for sale ($10 donation) with certificates - this one had an image of the Armstrong building where the historical society has their museum, and images of three town founders: George Washington Armstrong, Leonard Morrison, and Thomas Nesmith.  Derry and Londonderry will have their own commemorative Nutfield medals, too, this summer.

Tomorrow the celebrations continue with a 5K Family Fun Run/Walk, the Town Museum open house from Noon to 4pm, the Search School and Chapel open house from 2 to 4pm, and an outdoor religious service hosted by the Windham Presbyterian Church on the town common at 3:45. The weekend will wrap up with a ham and bean supper from 4:30 to 6:30 at the Windham Presbyterian Church, 1 Church Street.

The Nutfield Anniversary History Tour was being promoted today at the historical Society Tent.  The tour was created to highlight historic sites in Derry, Londonderry and Windham.  You can download the tour guide HERE and the tour map HERE.  It is a self guided driving tour through all three towns.
