Two Weathervanes near Gooch's Beach, Kennebunkport, Maine - Weathervane Wednesday

These weathervanes were photographed above a private residence on Gooch's Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine.  They are visible at the curve on Beach Street.  Gooch's Beach is also known as Long Beach, and it is a rare sandy beach in Maine.  It was named for John Gooch, who settled here in the 1640s and operated a ferry across the Kennebunk River.  In the 1750s Jedidiah Gooch built an inn nearby, and the beach became known as Gooch's beach.  The Seaside Inn is still standing, operated by the ninth generation of the Gooch family!  https://www.kennebunkbeachmaine.com/seasideinn/the-seaside-house/

These two dimensional weathervanes both have a nautical theme, which is appropriate for being located right on the public beach!  The mariner with a spyglass sits on top of a large cupola, and the three masted sailing ship is above a round tower overlooking the beach and ocean.  A large chimney blocks the view of the ship vane from the street, but both are visible from the sand.  There is a big widow's walk up on the roof, too.

Kennebunkport was a treasure trove of interesting weathervanes.  I'll post some more of these very unusual weathervanes in the coming weeks!
