Weathervane Wednesday ~ The Little White Church by the River

I post a series of weather vane photographs every Wednesday.  This started with images of weathervanes from the Londonderry area, but now I've found interesting weather vanes all across New England.  Sometimes my weather vanes are whimsical, or historical, but all are interesting.  Often my readers tip me off to some very unique or unusual weathervanes, too!

Today's weather vane is located on the banks of a very big river in New Hampshire

"The Little White Church by the River" is the Congregational Church in Hooksett, New Hampshire.  If you cross the Main Street bridge over the Merrimack River, you have a very clear view of this weathervane.  The church community was founded in 1824.  It was almost destroyed by the infamous flood of 1936, which flooded many buildings along the Merrimack River valley.  Again in 1994 it was almost destroyed, when the church's sanctuary survived a fire caused by arson. 

This simple, two dimensional weathervane is prominent over Main Street in Hooksett, and stands out over the community.  It is just a simple scrollwork vane, like many other church weathervanes of this era, when factories began to produce weathervanes like this on a mass scale for sale on buildings across the United States.
