Hollis, New Hampshire Congregational Church

The Congregational Church cemetery is located directly behind the church.  The graves are right up to the foundations and chimney.  Below you can see the Emerson family plot.  Reverend Daniel Emerson (1716 - 1801) was the founder of the church, and brother to my 6x great grandfather Brown Emerson (1704 - 1774).  I previously blogged about the Reverend Emerson's ledger stone at this link: http://nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com/2010/02/tombstone-tuesday.html    Today's post is about some of the other Emerson tombstones.

Genealogy of the Emerson Family:

Generation 1:  Thomas Emerson, born 26 Juy 1584 in Sedgfield Parish, Durham, England, died 1 May 1666 in Ipswich, Massachusetts; married on 1 July 1611 in Bishop's Stortford, Herfordshire, England to Elizabeth Brewster, born 24 July 1584 in England, died 10 August 1638 in Ipswich.  Nine children, two were ministers.

Generation 2. Reverend Joseph Emerson, born about 1620 in England, died on 3 January 1680 in Concord, Massachusetts; married on 7 December 1665 in Concord to Elizabeth Bulkely, daughter of the Reverend Edward Bulkely and Lucyann Coy, born about 1638 and died 4 September 1693 in Reading, Massachusetts.  Elizabeth Bulkely married second to John Brown.  Seven children.  He married first to Elizabeth Woodmansey about 1646 in Boston, and had one son. 

Generation 3. Peter Emerson, born about 1673 in Mendon, Massachusetts, died 19 January 1751 in Reading, Massachusetts; married on 11 November 1696 in Reading to Mary Brown, daughter of John Brown (see above) and his first wife, Anna Fiske.  Mary was born 23 March 1678 in Reading, and died before 1748, probably in Reading.  Ten children, including Reverend Daniel Emerson mentioned above, Brown Emerson (my 6x great grandfather), and Anna Emerson (1701- 1781), never married (her tombstone is above, too). 

Generation 4. Reverend Daniel Emerson, born 20 May 1716 in Reading, died 30 September 1801 in Hollis, New Hampshire; married on 17 October 1744 to Hannah Emerson, his cousin, daughter of Joseph Emerson and Mary Moody (great grandparents to the sage Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882).  Hannah was born 3 December 1722 in Malden, Massachusetts, died 28 February 1812 in Hollis, New Hampshire.  Thirteen children, including the Daniel Emerson (see tombstone above) and Ralph Emerson (his tombstone is also above).
