My Revolutionary War Ancestors - Amos Burnham of Ipswich, Massachusetts

This is the 11th Revolutionary War ancestor I have written about in this series.  My 5th great grandfather Amos Burnham was born on 13 July 1735 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, the son of David Burnham and Elizabeth Marshall.  On 27 January 1757 he married Sarah Giddings in Ipswich.  She was the daughter of Thomas Giddings and Martha Smith, born in 1737.  

Sarah and Amos had eleven children born in Essex and Ipswich between 1758 and 1782.  On 26 January 1782, Sarah died, just 12 days after giving birth to her last child, Judith, my 4th great grandmother.  I don't know how this infant survived without a mother, but she did live and I'm grateful!  Later that same year, on 4 October 1782 Amos married Mehitable Burnham, daughter of Solomon Burnham and Mehitable Emerson. I'm sure that the hasty marriage was to secure a wife to take care of his many children.  Mehitable was the widow of Joshua Foster.  He had at least one more child with his second marriage. 

During the Revolutionary War Amos Burnham served as a private in Captain David Low's Third Regiment, under Colonel Jonathan Cogswell's Company in 1778. I know very little about his time in the military, and very little about his private life.  Was he a farmer? A fisherman or mariner (Ipswich is a coastal town)? 

Amos Burnham died by drowning in Chebacco Pond in Essex on 28 November 1788 "while fowling" (hunting water fowl).  He was 54 years old.  This incident is mentioned on page 204 of the History of Ipswich, Essex and Hamilton, by Joseph B. Felt, 1834. I have not found a gravestone for Amos or either one of his two wives.  He left his second wife, Mehitable, a widow again for the second time with three children under the age of 18.  Judith, his daughter, my 4th great grandmother, married Joseph Allen on 5 April 1799 in Ipswich, and had eleven children, just like her own mother and father.

TYBOTT, TIBOTT, TIBBETT

Walter Tybott (1584 – 1651), my 10^th great grandfather, was from Wales. He was a member of Rev. Richard Blynman’s congregation.  This group of Puritans followed Rev. Blynman to New England about 1640 when he was forced from his church in Chepstow, Monmouthshire for his Puritan preaching.  It is thought that “The Blynman Party” (also known as “The Welsh Party”) was recruited by Gov. John Winslow.  They arrived in Plymouth, settled in Marshfield, and then Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1641.  Some went on to New London, Connecticut ten years later.  Apparently Walter Tybott and his family remained in Gloucester.

The Plymouth Colony records indicate that on 2 March 1640/41 Walter Tibbott, and others were nominated to become Freemen.  He was made Freeman on 19 May 1642. Sometime soon after becoming Freeman Walter Tybott went to Gloucester with others from The Blynman Party.  He was elected Selectman 1642 – 1645.

His will was proved at Salem Court 5 June 165 and it names his children and grandchildren "item i giue to my dafter mari harskol the wif of william hasskole fifteene pound in good pay. I gieu to josef hasskol son of william my farm at chebake. I guie to william hasskolls other sonnes twenti shelenes a pece to put to som good implement.” He also named his grandchild "Richard Dicke," granddaughter Elizabeth Dike, "son clark" [his daughter Agnes’s second husband] and "Sabelone" [Zebulon] Hill, soon-to-be-husband of granddaughter Elizabeth Dike.

Apparently he had only two daughters, Mary and Agnes.  I descend from Mary Tybott (1628 – 1693) who married William Haskell in Salem, Massachusetts in 1643.  They had nine children all born in Gloucester. Mary died on 16 August 1693 in Gloucester, and William died four days later.

Generation 1: Walter Tybott, born about 1584 in Wales, died 14 August 1651; married Mary UNKNOWN.  She remarried to John Harding on 22 April 1652 in Plymouth.  Mary died 21 February 1681 in Gloucester. Two daughters with Walter Tybott.

Generation 2: Mary Tybott, born 6 November 1628 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, died 24 August 1693 in Gloucester; married 6 November 1643 in Salem to William Haskell, son of William Haskell and Elinor Foule.  He was baptized 8 November 1618 in Charlton, Musgrove, Somersetshire, England, and died 20 August 1693 in Gloucester. Surname Saturday ~ ALCOCK of York, Maine

John Alcock, my 10^th great grandfather, supposedly arrived on the Assurance in 1635, and became a planter at York, Maine before the 1640s.  There is a surviving records of his servant, John Smith, who ran away and was returned to John Alcock by court order on 9 September 1640.  He bought fifty acres of land from William Hooke on 16 June 1643 in York, which was the first record land purchase of many he would make in the York area. 

John Alcock served as a rent collector for Sir Ferdinando Gorges in York. He was considered one of the wealthiest men in York County and had a large property on “Alcock’s Neck”.  His name was usually written as “Mr.” or “Esq.”  On 16 July 1650 he bought more land at Cape Neddick.  His estate was settled between 1671 and July 1675, but his actual death date is unknown.  “…he was suddenly surprised with death and had no opportunity to make his will or settle his estate” [MA Archives – Volume 3, page 149]

According to Bank’s History of York Maine, Volume 1, page 114 – 115 the Alcock children were Samuel, Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, Job, Hannah, Sarah & Lydia. His widow, Elizabeth, died in the Candlemas Massacre (also known as The Raid on York) of 1692, where she was living in her son-in-law, Rev. Shubael Dummer’s, house which burned and he was killed on his doorstep. Lydia (Alcock) Dummer, his wife, and their little boy were carried to Canada.  I descend from her sister, Sarah Alcock, my 9^th great grandmother, who married John Giddings of Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Generation 2: John Alcock, born about 1600 in Mancetter, died 21 June 1673 in York, Maine; married on 1 May 1627 in Mancetter to Elizabeth Wrightman. They had nine children.

Generation 3: Sarah Alcock, born about 1642 in York County, Maine; died 29 December 1711 in Gloucester, Massachusetts; married about 1660 to John Giddings, son of George Giddings and Jane Lawrence.  He was born about 1639 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, and died 3 March 1691 in the Chebacco Parish of Ipswich.  Ten children.

Surname Saturday ~ HASKELL of Gloucester, Massachusetts

HASKELL / HASKEL / HASKLE / HASCOLL / HASCALL

This is a case of my 9^th great grandfather who married my 10^th great grandmother.  Sounds funny? Well, it is a very tangled family tree.

William Haskell, my 10^th great grandfather, was born about 1578 probably in Charlton Musgrove, Somersetshire, England, where he also died and was buried on 11 May 1630.  He left a widow, my 10^th great grandmother, Elinor Foule, and seven children.  Sometime later Elinor remarried to John Stone, who happens to be my 9^th great grandfather through his first marriage to Elinor Cooke [See this link for my STONE lineage through their son Nathaniel Stone:   https://nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com/2014/12/surname-saturday-stone-of-beverly.html  ]

In 1635 John Stone brought his own two Stone sons, his second wife Elinor, and some of Haskell children to Massachusetts.  They settled at what is now Beverly, Massachusetts and owned a farm near the Bass River, close to where the United States Shoe Machinery Corporation, now the Cummings Center, was located.  If this sounds familiar, three generations of my family worked at “The Shoe”, including my own father, and it was just a few blocks from my childhood house on 7 Dearborn Avenue. Can you believe my family lived in this neighborhood for nearly 400 years? 

Of these four Haskell children who appear later in the Massachusetts records, much is known about Roger, who appeared to be here first.  According to an article in the New England Historic Genealogy Society Register: “Mark was apprenticed to John Whiting, broadweaver of Shepton Mallet, in 1635 for nine years. He does not appear in Massachusetts before 1652 he likely completed his apprenticeship before joining his brothers in New England.  Roger, the oldest, appears in Charlton Musgrove records as late as 1635 but received a land grant at Beverly, Mass., in 1636, which considerably narrows the probable date of his arrival.  William does not appear in any known New England records before 1643, but it seems likely he and Roger arrived together.  Roger died at Beverly, in 1667 and his will he gives 'to my sister Jone a heifer...' so we can surmise she was then in New England and perhaps married, though no marriage record survives." NEHGS Register, Volume 138, pages 225 - 226.

William Haskell, Jr., my 9^th great grandfather, was born 8 November 1618 in Charlton Musgrave.  He settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1643 where he was a mariner.  He was a selectman for a few years and a representative to the General Court six times.  He became lieutenant of the militia in 1661, and later promoted to captain.  When the first church was settled at Gloucester he was one of the first two deacons chosen.  He married a Mary Tybott, whose father, Walter Tybott, followed Reverend Richard Blynman from Wales to Gloucester. They had nine children, and both William and Mary died in 1693 only four days apart.

Their son, Mark Haskell, my 8^th great grandfather, married Elizabeth Giddings of Ipswich and had three children before he died young in 1691, age 33 years and 5 months. Elizabeth remarried to John Dennison. Her son, Mark Haskell, Jr., my 7^th great grandfather, lived a long life to 87 years.  He married Martha Tuthill and had thirteen children!  Martha was the great granddaughter of Remember Allerton, a Mayflower passenger.  She passed away in 1763 and Mark took a second wife, Elizabeth Porter, in 1767, who had been widowed three times by Daniel Gilbert, Joseph Goodhue, and John Burnham (who was my 7^th great grandfather with his first wife Anne Choate).  There was a lot of intermarriage in this branch of my family tree, don’t you think?

Lucy Haskell (1715 – 1789) is my 6^th great grandmother.  She married Jabez Treadwell, a cooper from Ipswich, in 1736.  I own an original copy of Jabez’s will, written on old linen paper, and written in 1781.  Lucy and Jabez had eleven children, and I descend from their son Nathaniel Treadwell (1753 – 1822).  You can see this written last will and testament at this link:  https://nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com/2009/10/jabez-treadwells-will.html

There is a great quote in the book Saga of Cape Ann, by Elliott Copeland & Melvin T. Rogers, 1960, page 135 “In the 18th Century, Bearskin Neck was the site of fishermen's shanties, boat building shops, stores which sold boat gear, bait, and clams, an old tavern, and the 'lean-to' where Wm. Haskell, who wore earrings and did up his hair on curl papers, sold home made ginger pop & molasses candy...."  I’d like to think that this was William Haskell (1618 – 1693), my 9^th great grandfather, but I really don’t know which William Haskell this excerpt describes.

Generation 4:  Mark Haskell, born 16 September 1687 in Gloucester, died 25 August 1775 in Ipswich; married about 14 January 1710 in Gloucester to Martha Tuthill, daughter rof John Tuthill and Martha Ward.  She was born 21 November 1690 in Ipswich, and died 15 May 1763 in Ipswich.  Thirteen children.

Generation 5: Lucy Haskell, born 21 May 1715 in Gloucester, died 21 September 1769 in Ipswich; married on 20 November 1736 in Ipswich to Jabez Treadwell, son of Nathaniel Treadwell and Hannah Unknown.  He was born 9 August 1713 in Ipswich, and died 22 December 1780 in Ipswich.  Eleven children.

The Giddings Family Register Chest of Drawers

GIDDINGS

George Giddings and his wife, Jane Lawrence, with three indentured servants, were aboard the ship Planter which came to Boston on 2 April 1635.  He brought with him a letter of recommendation from the rector at St. Albans, his home town.  You can read all about the Lawrence family, which was also aboard the Planter with three generations and more servants, in my Surname Saturday post last week at this link:

George Giddings was from a wealthy family in St. Albans, Herfordshire, England, and he is mentioned in his father’s will.  He also had a marriage bond which mentions his future step-father-in-law, John Tuttle. Upon settling at Ipswich, Massachusetts with his extended Lawrence and Tuttle in-laws, he served as deputy to the General Court, selectman, and was a deacon of his church. 

George Giddings left extensive probate records in Essex County when he died intestate in 1676.  He was one of the highest tax payers in Ipswich, and his estate was valued at over 1020 pounds sterling.  I descend from two of his eight children.  They are two long lineages that stay in Ipswich or Ipswich’s Chebacco Parish (now the town of Essex) since every generation lived there, right down to my mother who was born in Ipswich!

Surname Saturday ~ LAWRENCE of Ipswich, Massachusetts

LAWRENCE

The Lawrence family has deep roots in England and has been researched and written about by many genealogists.  I am descended of two children of Thomas Lawrence (1589 – 1625) who never came to the New World, but his wife, Joan Antrobus, remarried to John Tuttle (1596 – 1656) and brought her six Lawrence children and Tuttle children (of whom I descend from one- Simon Tuttle (1637 – 1691) ), to Massachusetts.

And so, although Thomas Lawrence never came to the New World, his children were here and left Lawrence descendants.  He died intestate and on 21 March 1624/25, his widow, Joan, was made administratrix of his property.  Her accounting, in 1627, names his children, John, Thomas, William, Jane and Marye.  He was the son of John Lawrence (1561 – 1609) and Elizabeth Bull, and he was mentioned  in his father’s estate documents in St. Albans, Herfordshire, England.

Joan Antrobus (about 1592 – 1661) was the daughter of Walter Anterbus and Joan Arnold of St. Albans.  Joan was 65 years old when she immigrated with her daughter, Joan Antrobus Tuttle, in 1635 onboard the Planter with her son-in-law John Tuttle, and her Lawrence and Tuttle grandchildren.  I have deep admiration for these two Joans, who came aboard this ship to the New World and cared for all these children on the passage across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Planter, with this big extended family of Lawrences and Tuttles, arrived at Boston, Massachusetts on 7 June 1635.  They settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts.  John Tuttle returned to England and later died at Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland on 30 December 1656.  Joan (Antrobus) (Lawrence) Tuttle was in Northern Ireland in 1659 and is believed to have died there after 29 January 1661.

Not only am I descended of three of Joan’s children, but my two lineages from her two Lawrence children are quite complicated, with much intermarriage.  I hope you can follow along!

Generation 1: Thomas Lawrence, son of John Lawrence and Elizabeth Bull, was baptized at St. Albans, Herfordshire, England on 2 February 1589, and died there on 20 March 1625;  he married on 23 October 1609 in St. Albans to Joan Antrobus, daughter of Walter Anterbus and Joan Arnold.  She was born about 1592 and died after 29 January 1661 probably in Northern Ireland.   Joan married second to John Tuttle, in 1627 in St. Albans.  Six Lawrence children, and I descend from two of them (and one Tuttle child).

Surname Saturday ~ GOODHUE of Ipswich, Massachusetts

GOODHUE

I don’t know much about William Goodhue (1612 – 1699), my 9^th great grandfather, which is sad because I descend from all three of his children.  I don’t know his English ancestry, nor do I know when he came to New England.  He settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts and was a freeman on 7 December 1636. He had three children with his wife, Margery Watson, and was married two more times but appears to have had no more children.

William Goodhue was a selectman and deacon of the church in 1658 in Ipswich.  He was a representative to the General Court in 1666 and a few more times after that.  He died in 1699 when he was 86 years old.

The daughter of William Goodhue, Mary, married Thomas Giddings in 1658.

The elder son, Joseph Goodhue, married first to Sarah Whipple in 1661.  She had ten children and then died delivering twins.  In a long letter written to her husband on 14 July 1681 she wrote out her wishes in case of her death at the time of this birth.   I have a transcription of this poignant letter at this blog post:   http://nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com/2010/03/amanuensis-monday-1681-letter.html   This letter spells out what should happen to her children and how they should be raised.  It’s a tear jerker.   She must have known it was going to be a difficult pregnancy and that she might not survive.

The youngest son, William Goodhue lived on the family farm in Chebacco Parish.  He was a deacon at the Chebacco Parish church. In 1687 Governor Andros imposed a tax on the people of Massachusetts in violation of their charter, not to be taxed without an assembly’s consent.  The minister of Ipswich and two men, one was William Goodhue, Jr., conferred a town meeting against this tax.  William and five Ipswich men were arrested and jailed in Boston.  The town of Ipswich paid their fines.  In 1704 Ipswich granted William Goodhue land for his losses.  This tax revolt was almost 100 years before the Revolutionary War.

The Giddings Family Register Chest

It’s amazing where you can find family history.  We were touring the Shelburne Museum in Vermont.  I don’t have any ancestors in Vermont.  We were there to see the folk art, which includes many weather vanes.  Of course, everything there is interesting and historical, so we were poking around in every building.  Inside one of the museum buildings, the Stone House, there was this chest.

The top of the chest looked like this.

So of course, we took a lot of photos because it was GENEALOGY.  The docent there said it was one of a kind, and I believe her.  I’ve seen family bibles, and family tree samplers, and other such household items with genealogy on them, but I’ve never seen a chest with a marble top carved with a family register. 

Then on second look I said to my husband, “Look, this is a Giddings family.  I have Giddings from Essex County, Massachusetts.  Do you think this family of Connecticut Giddings is related?”  We laughed, but I encouraged him to take a few more photos.  As soon as we arrived home I checked my files. 

Sure enough!  Deacon Thomas Giddings of Hartland, Connecticut was my first cousin 7 generations removed!  His father, Thomas Giddings (1683 – 1754) is the brother to my 8^th great grandmother, Elizabeth Giddings (1666 – 1725) who married Mark Haskell (b. 1685).  And, to make it even more interesting… his mother, Sarah Andrews (1685 – 1749) is the sister to John Andrews (1691 – 1762), my 6^th great grandfather in another lineage!

And so, yes, the Connecticut Giddings are related to the Chebacco Parish, Essex County, Massachusetts Giddings.  And this chest probably ended up in Vermont because Deacon Thomas Giddings’s wife, Mary Colt, died in Rutland, Vermont in 1812.
