I have another GREEN ancestor I have already featured at this blog, Bartholomew Green (about 1590 – 1636) of Cambridge, Massachusetts.  They do not appear to be kin.

Thomas Green, my 9^th great grandfather, arrived in Massachusetts aboard the ship Planter in 1635/6.  In 1646 he was living at Lady Deborah Moody’s farm in Lynn, Massachusetts, and by 1650 he was a resident of Malden.  He had a 63 acre farm located in what is now the Melrose and Wakefield border.  He was a farmer, and was elected a selectman in 1658, and a juror several times for Middlesex County.

There were two Thomas Greens living in Malden at this time.  This Thomas Green is called “senior” and his son is “Thomas Green junior”.  The other Thomas Green had no suffix after his name.  My ancestor Thomas Green left a will dated 12 November 1667, proven on 15 January 1667/8.  It doesn’t name his wife, but it names all his children.

Two of his children are my ancestors. His son William, my 8^th great grandfather, was born in 1625 and settled in Malden.  He was a freeman in 1668, selectman in 1678, 1683, and 1702.  His son, Isaac Green, my 7^th great grandfather, left Malden and settled in Falmouth, on Cape Cod, where he is buried. I descend from his daughter, Martha, born in 1705, my 6^th great grandmother who married Peter Robinson, the great great grandson of Rev. John Robinson, pastor to the pilgrims.

Thomas’s daughter, Hannah Green (1647 – 1721) is also my 8^th great great grandmother. She married Joseph Richardson and removed to the town of Woburn, which was settled by Malden and Charlestown residents.    Joseph Richardson was a member of Major Samuel Appleton’s militia and was engaged in the Great Swamp Fight on 19 December 1675.  They had five children.

My GREEN genealogy:

Generation 1: Thomas Green, born in England, died 19 December 1667 in Malden, Massachusetts; married on 26 June 1627 in Malden to Elizabeth Unknown.  She had ten children.  He married second Frances Watson, the widow of Isaac Wheeler and Richard Cook. 

Lineage A:

Generation 2A:  William Green, born 15 December 1635 in England; died 30 December 1705 in Malden; married on 13 March 1659 in Malden to Elizabeth Wheeler as his first wife (the daughter of Isaac Wheeler and Frances Watson, she had six children); married second on 6 February 1695 to Isabel Farmer, daughter of John Farmer and Isabella Burbage (she had no children).

Generation 3A: Isaac Green, born about 1666 in Malden, died 4 January 1739/40 in Falmouth, Massachusetts; married about 1693 to Sarah Unknown as his first wife (six children); married second on 6 August 1716 in Falmouth to Judith Betell.

Generation 4A1:  William Green, born 20 November 1696 in Malden, died about 1773 in Falmouth; married 26 May 1726 in Falmouth to Joanna Mendall, daughter of John Mendall and Joanna Standike.  She was born 13 May 1690 in Rochester, Massachusetts; and died before 3 May 1773. 

Generation 5A1:  Tabitha Green, born 18 December 1726 in Falmouth; married on 7 January 1748 to Jabez Robinson, son of Peter Robinson and Martha Green (see below).  He was born 9 June 1726 in Falmouth.  Five children.

Thirty Five Years Ago Today...

Thirty five years ago today these two kids were married in Holden, Massachusetts at the First Congregational Church, July 2, 1983.

It was a hot, humid day, just like today.  My uncle Robert drove me around the block several times because he wanted me to be "fashionably late" for my wedding.  Black thunder clouds were rolling in, so I begged him to "take me to the church on time"!  Just at the stroke of 10am the skies opened and it started to pour.  There was thunder and lightning as my Dad walked me in the church and up the stairs to the sanctuary.  The thunder was so loud the minister had to pause his remarks at the beginning of the service.

By the end of the wedding the sun was shining and the rain had stopped. All our guests said it was a blessing to have rain at a wedding.  That must have been true.  Today is our thirty-fifth anniversary!

We had our reception luncheon at the William Paul House restaurant down the street from the church. Now this pretty building is a Chinese restaurant!

Both Dads have both passed away since then.  And Uncle Robert. And many other friends and relatives.  But we also have new friends and relatives, and a daughter and son-in-law, and a beautiful granddaughter.  Life goes on.

We took our honeymoon in Quebec and Montreal. We've been back to visit Quebec several times and it remains a favorite destination.  I hope to return again soon.

it was raining again!

Thirty five years ago president Ronald Reagan announced that GPS would become available for civilians, Mount Kilauea began erupting (and still is erupting!), the final episode of MASH aired, Michael Jackson did his first moonwalk in the "Billie Jean" video, Sally Ride became the first American woman astronaut, and the United States invaded the island of Grenada.  Gas cost $1.03 per gallon, a postage stamp was 20 cents, and we bought our first 2 bedroom condo in Malden (outskirts of Boston) for $55,000.  I recently saw an ad for a condo for sale in that same building for over $315,000.

One year later, on the exact day of our first anniversary, Vincent had his first day of work at Sanders Associates in New Hampshire.  By October 1st we had moved up to Londonderry.  Vincent still works for the same company, although the name has changed three or four times over the years. We still live in New Hampshire, but in the next town over (Manchester).

Thomas Call, my 9^th great grandfather, was born in Faversham, Kent England in 1597.  He arrived in Massachusetts with his wife, Bennett, and three children on the ship Hercules in 1637.  He went on to have six more children.  He built his home on beside the Mystic River in Charlestown, about two and half miles from Bunker Hill.    His second wife, Joanna, was the widow of Daniel Shepardson.  Thomas Call was a baker, and so was his son, John, who married Hannah Kettell.    One of his sons, Thomas, Jr , married his step-sister Lydia Shepardson.

In the next generation John Call, my 8^th great grandfather, John Call was less than one year old when his family arrived in Massachusetts from England.  He fought in King Phillip’s War.  He was admitted to the church on 29 April 1662 and became a deacon of the First Church in Charlestown.  His wife was the daughter of Richard Kettell, an ancestor of Henry David Thoreau.

McClure, 1850, page 240 has a short sketch of Thomas Call.  There is also a short sketch of Thomas Call in A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, by James Savage, 1969, Volume 1, pages 329 - 330.

Who died about 1644 in Malden.  Thomas married second after 26 July 1644 in Malden to Joane, widow of Daniel Shepardson.  Nine children.

Generation 2: John Call, baptized on 6 March 1636 in Faversham, died 19 April 1697 in Charlestown, Massachusetts; married on 26 June 1656 in Charlestown to Hannah Kettell, daughter of Richard Kettell and Hester Ward.  She was born on 27 October 1637 in Charlestown, and died 27 August 1708 in Charlestown.  Eight children.

Generation 3: Mehitable Call, baptized on 30 June 1668 in Charlestown, died on 25 November 1727 in Charlestown; married on 2 December 1685 in Charlestown to John Rand, son of Thomas Rand and Sarah Edenden.  He was born 6 February 1662 in Charlestown and died 4 September 1737 in Charlestown.

His son, William Greene, my 9x great grandfather, was born in Topsfield in 1635 and settled also in Malden.  He was made a freeman in Malden in 1668 and was a selectman in 1678, 1683, and 1702.   Thomas’s grandson, Isaac Green, my 8x great grandfather, left Malden and settled in Falmouth, on Cape Cod, where he is buried.

Generation 2: William Green, born 15 December 1635 in England, died 30 Decmeber 1705 in Malden; married first on 13 March 1659 to Elizabeth Wheeler, daughter of Isaac Wheeler and Frances Watson.  Three children.  He married second to Isabel Farmer.

Generation 3: Isaac Greene, born 27 December 1674 in Malden, died 4 January 1740 in Falmouth, Massachusetts; married Sarah Unknown. Four children.

Generation 4:  Martha Green, born 28 October 1705 in Falmouth, married on 18 July 1724 in Falmouth to Peter Robinson, son of Isaac Robinson and Hannah Harper (great great grandson of Rev. John Robinson, pastor to the Mayflower Pilgrims in England and in Leyden, Holland). Seven children.

Generation 5: Jabez Robinson, born 9 June 1726 in Falmouth; married on 7 January 1748 to Tabitha Green, daughter of William Green and Joanna Mendall (a possible 2^nd cousin and a third Green lineage?)  Five children.

Generation 6: Elizabeth Robinson, born 17 June 1750 in Falmouth, died 27 July 1837; married on 8 September 1774 to Ebenezer Crosby, son of Jonathan Crosby and Hannah Hamblin. They removed from Falmouth, Massachusetts to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Eleven children.

Generation 7: Rebecca Crosby, born 19 December 1789 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; married on 12 August 1808 in Chebogue, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Comfort Haley, son of Comfort Haley and Abigail Allen.  Eleven children.

Generation 8: Joseph Edwin Healy, born 12 August 1823 in Belfast, Maine or Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, died on 17 June 1862 at the Battle of Saint Charles, Arkansas during the Civil War; married on 3 February 1848 to Matilda Weston, daughter of Zadoc Weston and Mary Clements.  Four children.

Generation 9: Mary Etta Healey, born 19 May 1852 in Beverly, Massachusetts, died 23 July 1932 in Beverly, Massachusetts; married on 14 March 1870 in Salem, Massachusetts to Peter Hoogerzeil, son of the immigrant Peter Hoogerzeil of Dordrecht, Holland, and Eunice Stone. Six children.

Generation 10: Florence Etta Hoogerzeil, born 20 August 1871 in Beverly, died 10 February 1941 in Hamilton, Massachusetts; married on 25 December 1890 in Beverly to Arthur Treadwell Hitchings, son of Abijah Franklin Hitchings and Hannah Eliza Lewis.  Nine children.

Surname Saturday ~ Tufts of Charlestown and Malden, Massachusetts

TUFTS

My first and only Tufts ancestor is Mary Tufts, the daughter of Peter and Frances Tufts, born in England about 1613.  She married George Fowle in England, about 1634, had one son, and then came to America.  She lived first in Concord, Massachusetts (where she had five children), and then in Charlestown (where she had five more children!).

It is interesting that Mary’s sister, Elizabeth, and brother, Peter Tufts, all came to America, too, and lived in Malden, Massachusetts next door to Charlestown.   Peter Tufts  (1616 – 1700) married Mary Pierce in 1647 in Charlestown, and had five children.  Sister Elizabeth Tufts (about 1619 – 1693) married Thomas Lynde in Charlestown in 1646. 

Tufts University http://www.tufts.edu/ is located in both Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts, across the Mystic River from Charlestown and Malden.   The founders were Universalists, and 20 acres of land were donated by Charles Tufts in 1852 on top of Walnut Hill, the highest point in Medford.  He also made a second  donation of another 80 acres later in his life.  In 1892 the trustees voted to admit both men and women.  P. T. Barnum was an early benefactor, and he started a Natural History Museum on campus with his animal specimens, including Jumbo the elephant, who is the college mascot.

Charles Tufts (1781 – 1876), the college benefactor, is the 3x great grandson of Peter Tufts and Mary Pierce of Malden, Massachusetts.   He would be my fourth cousin, five generations removed.  He made his fortune in brickmaking, and inherited most of his land.   He is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Eleven children.
