Surname Saturday ~ BREWER of Roxbury, Massachusetts and Hampton, New Hampshire

There has been a lot of confusion online about Thomas Brewer of early Massachusetts.  He appears in early records of Roxbury and Hampton, New Hampshire.  No one knows his wife’s name.  His origins are a mystery.

According to records in Boston “Wiliam Lane was married to Mary Brewer, the daughter of Thomas Brewer of Roxbury, 21: 6: 56”   The following year in Hampton, New Hampshire there is a record that Sarah Brewer and Thomas Webster married on 29 November 1657.  Also in the Hampton records “ould goodman Brewer dyed 23 March 1690.  In all probability, this was Thomas Brewer, who died at the home of his daughter Sarah (Brewer) Webster.

According to the NEHGS Register, Volume 30, pages 424 and 425 “The son of Mary (Brewer) Lane married at Boston, 21 June 1680, Sarah Webster of Hampton, dau. Of Sarah (Brewer) Webster.  If Mrs. Lane and Mrs. Webster were sisters, these children would be first cousins; and the fact that Mrs. Webster lived at Hampton would account for her father’s removing to that town.  This view was urged in the Register, ix, 160, and is in every respect most probable.”

The two sisters, Sarah Brewer and Mary Brewer are BOTH my ancestresses.  The John Brewer of Ipswich who married Mary Whitmore on 23 October 1647 is the son of Thomas Brewer.  His three children are Mary, born 23 September 1648; John, born 6 October 1653;  and Sarah, born 27 March 1655.

My BREWER genealogy:

Generation 1:  Thomas Brewer,  died 23 March 1690 in Hampton, New Hampshire; married to Unknown.  Three children- John, Mary and Sarah.

Lineage A:

Generation 2: Mary Brewer, born about 1636; married on 21 August 1656 in Boston to William Lane as his second wife.  He was born about 1621 in England and died 5 June 1715 in Hampton.  Four children with Mary Brewer. 

Generation 3:   William Lane born 1 October 1659, died 14 February 1749;  married on 21 June 1680 to Sarah Webster (his first cousin),  daughter of Thomas Webster and Sarah Brewer.  She was born 22 January 1661 in Hampton and died 6 January 1745 in Hampton.  Seven children.

Generation 4: Samuel Lane m. Elizabeth Blake

Generation 5: Samuel Lane m. Hepzibah Sleeper

Generation 6: Sarah Lane m. Elisha Batchelder

Generation 7: Jonathan Batchelder m. Nancy Thompson

Generation 2:  Sarah Brewer, born about 1637; married on 2 November 1657 to Thomas Webster, son of Thomas Webster and Margery UNKNOWN.  He was born about 1632 in Ormesby, Norfolk, England and died 5 January 1715 in Hampton, New Hampshire.  Nine children.

William Lane (about 1621 – 1715), the immigrant, was my 9^th great grandfather.  He was a cordwainer in Boston, Massachusetts and had two wives named Mary.  The first wife’s maiden name was unknown, and the second wife was Mary Brewer (my 9^th great grandmother), daughter of Thomas Brewer and Elizabeth Graves.  Her sister, Sarah Brewer, was the wife of Thomas Webster, who removed to Hampton, New Hampshire.   William Lane was made a freeman in Boston 6 May 1657.

William Lane, Jr. (1659 – 1749) and his wife, Sarah Webster, were first cousins, and my 8^th great grandparents.  Their names are on a 1681 list of the members of the 2^nd Church (the Old North Church) in Boston, and after that they removed to Hampton, New Hampshire and settled near Sarah’s father, Thomas Webster.  William Lane was a tailor.

I descend from William Lane, Jr’s son Samuel Lane (1698 – 1776) who married Elizabeth Blake, my 7^th great grandparents.   They lived in Hampton Falls, and all three of their first children died of throat distemper on 2 August 1735.  Samuel Lane was a farmer.  Samuel Lane, Jr. (1741 – 1822) was my 6^th great grandfather.

Generation 1:  William Lane, born about 1621 in England, died 5 June 1715 in Hampton, New Hampshire; married first to Mary UNKNOWN (four children); married second to Mary Brewer, daughter of Thomas Brewer and Elizabeth Graves on 21 August 1656 in Boston (four more children).

Generation 4: Samuel Lane, born in 1741 in Hampton Falls, died 15 January 1822 in Hampton Falls; married in 1760 to Hepizah Sleeper, daughter of Moses Sleeper and Margaret Sanborn.  She was born 24 March 1742 in Kingston, New Hampshire.  Nine children.

Generation 5:  Sarah Lane, born 24 May 1769 in Hampton Falls, died 27 February 1819 in Pittsfield, New Hampshire; married to Elisha Batchelder, son of David Batchelder and Elizabeth Swett.  He was born 10 June 1763 in Hampton Falls, and died 11 October 1813 in Pittsfield.  Four children.

Tombstone Tuesday ~ Seen in Honolulu

This tombstone was photographed at the Oahu Cemetery, on Nu'uanu Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii.  The stark black granite with the white porcelain photograph caught my eye, across the lane from the Dominis family plot where I was paying my respects.  After reading the epitaph and photographing this gravestone, I knew I had to share it on my blog.  After all, when you get to the last line you read that she was not only nobility, she was a genealogist, too!

Longest Royal Survivor

Elizabeth Kekaaniauokalani Kalanijuiohilaukapu

Laanui was a favorite at the royal courts of King's 

Kamehameha III, IV, Lunalilo and Kalakua. The

latter four were her schoolmates at the Royal Boarding

School, founded by Kamehameha III for the preparation

of Hawaii's future Rulers. Kekaaniau was the last

surviving member of it's original 16 royal students.  In

1864, She married Franklin Seaver Pratt of Boston, who 

served as Consul General and Minister of Finance to the

Hawaiian Kingdom.  In 1920, she published memoirs of

the illustrious Kamehameha dynasty and collateral

branches of the Keoua lineage in

"Keoua Nui - Father of Kings"

"Last of Great Alii's Hears Final Call"

You can see Elizabeth's lineage at this link: http://www.royalark.net/Hawaii/hawaii.htm  (she is listed near the bottom of the page).  There is a wikipedia entry for her at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Kekaaniau with her complete biography.  Her husband, Franklin Seaver Pratt of Boston (1829 - 1894) is buried next to her in the same plot at Oahu Cemetery. They had no children.

Interesting Historical Note!

Franklin Seaver Pratt may have followed his sister to Hawaii!  His sister, Maria Pratt, married Charles Brewer, the son of Isaac C. Brewer and nephew to Captain Charles Brewer of the trading company C. Brewer and Co. of Honolulu.  They were married on 27 March 1845 and immediately went to Hawaii so that Captain Charles Brewer could retire from business and return to Jamaica Plain, Boston.

The Brewer family exchanged many, many letters with my Great Aunt Mary (Jones) Dominis, and I have photos of the originals found in the Hawaii State Archives.  They were such close friends that Captain Brewer named his second son John Dominis Brewer (1845 - 1879).  Most of his other children stayed in Massachusetts, but John D. Brewer assisted with the business in Hawaii and died in Honolulu in 1879.

Not only that, but Franklin Seaver Pratt is a distant cousin to genealogist and genea-blogger, Randy Seaver of San Diego, California. We have been exchanging genealogy information on Franklin Seaver Pratt and his sister, Maria.
