MORSE / MOORS

My 10^th great grandfather, Samuel Morse (1576 – 1654) arrived on board the ship Increase in 1635 with his wife, Elizabeth, a son Joseph, and “Elizabeth Daniel”, age 2, a granddaughter.  His living children followed him to Massachusetts but were not listed on the Increase. The English origins of Samuel and Elizabeth have been written up in journals.  Samuel Morse is the son of Rev. Thomas Morse of Foxearth Essex, and his wife Elizabeth Jasper is the daughter of Lancelot Jasper and Rose Shephard of Suffolk.   See below for the journals with their English origins.

Upon arriving in New England, Samuel and Elizabeth Morse first lived in Watertown, and in 1636 Samuel and his sons Joseph and Daniel were each granted twelve acres in Dedham. In 1640 he was admitted to the church in Dedham, and a few months later he became a freeman.  He was one of the original nineteen settlers of Dedham.

The inventory of his estate calls him “Samuell Morse of Medfield, lately deceased”.  His will mentions his wife Elizabeth, John Morse, Daniell Morse, Mary Bullin & Ann Morse “the wife of my dearly beloved son Joseph deceased, who with my said children shall have an equal portion”.  The will was witnessed by two neighbors and Samuel Bullin, my 9^th great grandfather, husband of Mary, the youngest Morse child.

Thomas Morse, baptized 12 June 1576 in Boxted, Essex, England, died in Medfield, Massachusetts 5 December 1654; married on 29 June 1602 in Redgrave, Suffolk, to Elizabeth Jasper, daughter of Lancelot Jasper and Rose Shepard.  She was baptized on 30 January 1579/80 in Redgrave, and died on 20 June 1655 in Medfield.  Seven children.

Generation 2: Mary Morse, baptized on 13 August 1620 in Burgate, Suffolk, died on 14 February 1688 in Sherborn, Massachusetts; married on 10 August 1641 in Dedham to Samuel Bullen.  Ten children

Surname Saturday ~ WILDER of Hingham, Massachusetts

Thomas Wilder, my 10^th great grandfather, never came to the New World, but his widow, Martha, came with her children on board the ship Confidence in 1638.  She settled in Hingham, where “Widow Wilder” was granted a house lot. 

According to an article in the NEHGS Register, Volume 31 [1887], pages 410 – 411, “A Page from the History of the Wilders” by Rev. Moses H. Wilder, he described how he went to England and researched Thomas Wilder, Esquire, who died there in 1634.  His widow was named Martha, and she had an estate at Shiplake, Oxfordshire until she came to America.  This was part of a book Rev. Wilder wrote Book of the Wilders: a further contribution to the history of the Wilders, from 1497, in England, to the immigration of Martha, a widow, and her family to Massachusetts Bay, in 1638, NEHGS 1985 (reprint of the original from 1878).  In this book Rev. Wilder traces the family back to 1497 to a Nicholas Wilder.

No one knows Martha's maiden name, nor her origins. 

Martha’s two sons, Thomas and Edward, preceded her to New England. She arrived with her two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary, my 9^th great grandmother. Mary (about 1623 – 1658) who married Joseph Underwood.

Generation 1: Thomas Wilder, son of John Wilder and Alice Keats, born 1579 and died 23 October 1634 at Shiplake, Oxfordshire, England; married about 1618 in England to Martha Unknown.  Four children.

Generation 2:  Mary Wilder, born about 1623 in Shiplake, died 13 February 1658 in Watertown, Massachusetts; married about 1644 in Hingham, Massachusetts to Joseph Underwood.  He was born about 1614 in England and died 16 February 1676/77 in Watertown.  Joseph married second to Mary Howe.

Surname Saturday ~ UNDERWOOD of Hingham and Watertown, Massachusetts

Joseph Underwood, my 9^th great grandfather, came to America with his brother, Thomas, and first settled in Hingham about 1637.  They removed to Watertown about 1645, where Joseph was admitted as a freeman. He married Martha Wilder, who had come from England with her widowed mother, a brother and a sister in 1638.  She gave him seven children before she died in 1658, and he remarried to Mary Howe of Dorchester, the daughter of Abraham Howe.

My 8^th great grandfather was Joseph Underwood, Jr. (about 1650 – 1691).  His wife was Elizabeth Bond, who survived him and remarried to William Bull in 1693.  My 7^th great grandmother is their daughter, Sarah (1687 – 1757) who married John Bullen in 1709.

Jonathan Fairbanks (abt 1594 – 1668), my 10^th great grandfather, came from Halifax in Yorkshire, England. He was the son of John Fairbanks (born about 1560) and Isabella Staincliffe, the grandson of George Fairbanks (born about 1530) and Sybil Wade, and the great grandson of Gilbert Fairbanks and his wife Janet.

Jonathan settled in Dedham with his wife and six children, and built the house which is still standing.  The Fairbanks House is  built of timber from England and is considered to be one of the oldest frame houses in the United States.  It remained in the Fairbanks house and has never been deeded or mortgaged, and has belonged to the Fairbanks Family Association since 1903.

Jonathan Fairbanks signed the Dedham Covenant in 1636.  His will names his wife and five surviving children.  I descend from their son Jonas (1624/5 – 1676), my 9^th great grandfather, who removed his family to Lancaster, Massachusetts where he was killed by the native Indians with his son Joshua on 10 February 1676.  His wife, Lydia Prescott remarried to Elias Barron as his second wife. 

My 8^th great grandmother was Grace Fairbanks (1663 – 1689), who was orphaned when her father was killed in Lancaster at age 12.  She married Ephraim Bullen of Sherborn and had four children.  My Fairbanks lineage daughters out here.  The next generation removed to Brimfield, Massachusetts, and the next generation to Nova Scotia, Canada as planters upon the removal of the Acadians.

Surname Saturday ~ BULLEN of Medfield, Dedham, and Sherborn, Massachusetts

Samuel Bullen (about 1617 - 1691), my 9th great grandfather, is of unknown origins. When he arrived in Massachusetts from England he was an indentured servant to Jonathan Fairbanks of Dedham.  He signed the Dedham Compact in 1639 and he took the freeman's oath in 1641, after his indenture was complete.  He also married Mary Morse in 1641 and owned a house in Dedham by 1646.

When Medfield was settled in 1651 he was one of the first thirteen original settlers.  The town was attacked during King Phillip's War, and 32 houses were burned, including Samuel Bullen's home.  The family relocated to Sherborn to be near Mary's brother, Daniel Morse.  This is when the house on Brush Hill Road was built.

Later, in 1679,  Samuel was able to petition for his losses during the war and he returned to Medfield and rebuilt his house.  He became a Medfield selectman in 1682 and was chosen to be a deacon in 1689.

Samuel Bullen has two grave markers, an original field stone and a memorial erected 100 years later by his descendants in the Vine Lake Cemetery in Medfield, Massachusetts.  You can see photographs at the Find A Grave website at this link:

His son Ephraim (1653 - 1690), my 8th great grandfather, married Grace Fairbanks, the granddaughter of Jonathan Fairbanks, his father's master during his indentured servitude.  They lived in Sherborn and four children.  I descend from their son John (1686 - 1757), my 7th great grandfather who removed to Brimfield in western Massachusetts.  This is where my lineage daughters out, with their daughter Grace (born 1727) in Brimfield, my 6th great grandmother, who married Ebenezer Healy and removed to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

My BULLEN genealogy:

Generation 1:  Samuel Bullen, born about 1617 in England, died 16 January 1691/2 in Medfield, Massachusetts; married on 10 August 1641 Medfield to Mary Morse, daughter of Samuel Morse and Elizabeth Jasper.  She was baptized on 13 August 1620 in Redgrave, Suffolk, England and died 14 February 1688 in Sherborn, Massachusetts.  Ten children.

Generation 2:  Ephraim Bullen, born 18 July 1653 in Dedham, died 1690 in Sherborn; married about 1680 to Grace Fairbanks, daughter of Jonas Fairbanks and Lydia Prescott.  She was born 15 September 1663 in Lancaster, Massachusetts, and died 11 August 1689 in Sherborn.  Four children.

Generation 3:  John Bullen, born 22 February 1686 in Sherborn, died 28 January 1757 in Brimfield, Massachusetts; married 31 August 1709 in Sherborn to Sarah Underwood, daughter of Joseph Underwood and Elizabeth Unknown.  She was born 9 February 1687 in Watertown, and died 18 September 1757 in Brimfield.  One known child.

Generation 4:  Grace Bullen, born 1727 in Brimfield; married Ebenezer Healy, son of Paul Healy and Elizabeth Unknown.  He was born 21 January 1708 in Rehoboth, and died 14 February 1777 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.  Eight children.

My 8^th great grandfather, William Hele, first arrived in Massachusetts about 1640 when he joined the church at Lynn.  In 1643 he was dismissed from the church at Lynn to join the church in Cambridge.   He lived near where the Harvard Observatory is located, and there is still a Healey Street nearby off Concord, Avenue.  William Hele was a controversial figure. He had five wives and twelve children. His wives all died young, and he bragged of killing them. He was the Cambridge jailor from 1672 until 29 December 1682, when he was found with a pregnant inmate inflagrante delicto. Hele was arrested, “sentence to be severely whipped 20 stripes”, was imprisoned in his own jail, where he later died.

His fourth wife was my 8^th great grandmother, Phebe Green.  Her brother and father filed a complaint against him in 1666 for abusing his wife.  Two servants gave testimony against William Hele, as well as Elizabeth Green, her mother. Phebe died in childbirth a few years later.  In 1677 he married his last wife.

In the second generation I descend from Paul Healy (about 1664 – 1717), my 7^th great grandfather, who served in the militia with his brother in New Hampshire. Paul eventually removed to Rehoboth, where he married a woman named Elizabeth and had 14 children. 

Next, I descend from Paul Healy’s son, Ebenezer (1708 – 1777) who first lived in the 3^rd parish of Dedham, which is now the town of Norwood, Massachusetts. He was part of the building committee to construct the first Norwood meetinghouse.    He married Grace Bullen and had 8 children.

In the next generation I descend from Comfort Haley (1754 – 1821), my 5^th great grandfather, who removed to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.  He owned a fleet of ships and is buried at the Old Cemetery in Chebogue, near Yarmouth, behind the Congregational Church. I visited his grave in 2008.  He married Abigail Allen in 1777, near Chebogue.  She was a descendant of William Allen of Manchester, Massachusetts. They had seven children born in Chebogue.

Comfort Haley, Jr. (1787 – 1874), my 4^th great grandfather, was a mariner like his father, and he operated the fleet of ships with his brother, Jeremiah.  He is listed in a census record as a tanner.  He married Rebecca Crosby in Chebogue in 1808.  She was the descendant of Cape Codders.  They had eleven children.

Their son, Joseph Edwin Healy (1823 – 1862) was my 3^rd great grandfather.  He removed back to Massachusetts with his wife, Matilda Weston (another descendant of Cape Codders and Mayflower passengers).  They settled in Beverly, Massachusetts where they had four children.  Joseph Edwin Healey was another mariner and fisherman.  He enlisted in the navy during the American Civil War, where he died aboard the iron clad ship Mound City when it was hit with bombs during the Battle of Saint Charles in Arkansas.  He died, as did most of the men aboard the Mound City, when it exploded and burned or scalded most of the sailors, on 17 June 1862.  He was 40 years old and has a Civil War gravestone in the Central Cemetery in Beverly, next to his wife, Matilda.

My great great grandmother was Mary Etta Healey (1852 – 1932), who was born and died in Beverly, Massachusetts. She married Peter Hoogerzeil, Jr. and had six children. Peter was the son of a Dutch immigrant and his mother, Eunice Stone, had Colonial roots going back to the 1620s in Massachusetts. Peter Hoogerzeil was another fisherman, and he started an express business (moving merchandise by wagons) with his brother-in-law John E. Healey in 1867 on Bartlett Street in Beverly. Peter was also a prolific inventor and tinkerer.  He held at least seven patents for his inventions.

My HEALEY genealogy:

Generation 1:  William Hele, born about 1613 possibly in Devonshire, England, died on 18 November 1683 in Cambridge, Massachusetts; married on 15 August 1661 in Cambridge to Phebe Green, my 8^th great grandmother, daughter of Bartholomew Green and his wife Elizabeth.  She was born about 1629 and died before 1677.  Phebe was his fourth wife, he was also married to Grace Ives about 1643, Mary Rogers in 1650, Grace Butterice on 14 October 1653, and his fifth wife was Sarah Cutting, widow of James Browne, on 29 November 1677.  He had thirteen children in all.

Generation 2:  Paul Healy, born about 1664 in Cambridge, died 3 December 1717 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts; married about 1695 to Elizabeth Unknown.  Fourteen children.

Generation 3:  Ebenezer Healy, born 21 January 1708 in Rehoboth, died 14 February 1777 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; married to Grace Bullen, daughter of John Bullen and Sarah Underwood.  She was born about 1727 in Brimfield, Massachusetts.  Eight children. 

Generation 4:  Comfort Haley, born about 1754 in Brimfield, died 15 May 1821 near Chebogue, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; married on 21 July 1777 in Chebogue to Abigail Allen, daughter of Jeremiah Allen and Eunice Gardner.  She was born 23 July 1753 in Manchester, Massachusetts, and died 16 June 1799 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.  Seven children. 

Generation 5: Comfort Haley, Jr. , born 9 October 1787 in Chebogue, died 3 December 1874 in Chebogue; married on 12 August 1808 in Chebogue to Rebecca Crosby, daughter of Ebenezer Crosby and Elizabeth Robinson.  She was born 19 December 1789 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and died in 1889.  Eleven children.

Generation 6:  Joseph Edwin Healy, born 12 August 1823 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, died 17 June 1862 at the Battle of Saint Charles in Arkansas during the Civil War; married on 3 Feb 1848 in Canada to Matilda Weston, daughter of Zadoc Weston and Mary Clements.  She was born in October 1825 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and died 19 August 1909 in Beverly, Massachusetts. Four children.

Generation 7:  Mary Etta Healey, born 19 May 1852 in Beverly, died 23 July 1932 in Beverly; married on 14 March 1870 in Salem, Massachusetts to Peter Hoogerzeil, son of Peter Hoogerzeil and Eunice Stone.  He was born 24 June 1841 in Beverly, and died 10 May 1908 in Beverly.  Six children.
