My 7th Great Grandfather, John Stone, died 1736 ~ Tombstone Tuesday

John Stone, the son of Nathaniel Stone and Remember Corning, was born 20 April 1661 in Salem, Massachusetts. He was married first to Hester Gaines, second to Sarah Gale, and third to Jane (Stacy) Standley.  John Stone was a weaver.  He died non compos mentis, but left a will and an appointed guardian John Cleaves.  I descend from his marriage with Sarah Gale, through his daughter Susanna Stone (1702 - 1751) who married Randall Preston.  

I also descend from John Stone's brother, Nathaniel Stone (1663 - 1741) who married Mary Balch in 1689 in Beverly. 

John Stone had ten children with his wife Sarah Gale:  Priscilla (b. 1690), Edmond (b. 1691), Edmond (b. 1692), Sarah (b. 1693), Miriam (b. 1695), Eunice (b. 1696), Ambrose (b. 1698), Susanna (b. 1702), Remember (b. 1704), and Charity (b. 1700).   He had three children with his first wife, Hester Gaines:  Esther (b. 1684), John (b. 1686), and Mary (b. 1689).   He had no children with his third wife.

Every two years the Beverly Historical Society hosts the "Old Planters Reunion" for descendants of the first settlers in what is now Beverly, Massachusetts.   This weekend was a three day event that included historic house tours, cemetery visits, lectures, a visit to the city hall archivists, a dinner at the Hale Farm, the annual Balch and Woodbury family reunions, and other events. We had a wonderful time in Beverly meeting lots of cousins and having fun.  I'm descended of a lot of these "Old Planters" including BALCH, BLACK, DODGE, DIXEY, ELLINWOOD, GALE, HASKELL, HERRICK, LEACH, STONE, THORNDIKE, WEST, TUCK and WOODBURY.

Dinner in the backyard of the Hale Farm.  It was built in 1694 by Rev. John Hale
who played a large part in the 1692 Salem Witch Hysteria. 

We toured the Old North Beverly burial ground and also the
well hidden Dodges Burial Ground, and found lots of ancestors!

We finished the weekend with a tour of the Beverly "Gold Coast"
on the schooner "Fame".

Lots of cousins helped to lift the sails for our tour of Beverly Harbor.

Surname Saturday ~ GALE of Cambridge and Beverly, Massachusetts

I recently blogged about my ancestors, John Stone and William Dixey, who were both ferrymen on the Bass River between Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts.    They kept the business all in the family by passing the job on to Edmund Gale in 1694.

Edmund Gale’s father was also Edmund/Edmond Gale, who came from England and settled in “Newtown” or Cambridge, Massachusetts.  The immigrant Edmund Gale (about 1593 – 1642) had seven children.  His son Ambrose settled in Marblehead, and son Bartholomew settled in Salem, all near Beverly, Massachusetts where Edmund (about 1640 – 1716) settled.

Edmund Gale, Jr. married Sarah Dixey, daughter of Captain William Dixey.  He was a fisherman and seaman before operating the ferry. He had eleven children, including Sarah (1666 – about 1726) my 7^th great grandmother.  Sarah’s husband was John Stone, so all her children were descendants of three ferrymen from Beverly, Massachusetts.

Some GALE resources:

Edmond Gale is not listed in Martin Hollick’s guide New Englanders in the 1600s, nor there a sketch in the Great Migration series.   There is an old book The Gale Family Records in England and the United States by George Gale, 1867, available on line at Google Book Search, but this book has many errors and inaccuracies.  Beware!  The best books are The Salem and Beverly records, and The Ancestry of Sarah Stone by Walter Goodwin Davis, 1930 (another old book).

A search of the journals and periodicals at the NEHGS database did not turn up a sketch of the GALE family, but many references to early records in Boston, Cambridge, Salem, Beverly and Marblehead.  These documents are the best way to piece together a Gale family tree.

My GALE genealogy:

Generation 1: Edmond Gale, born about 1593 in Ixworth, Suffolk, England, died 29 July 1642 in Boston, Massachusetts; married Unknown. Seven children born in England.

Generation 2: Edmund Gale, born about 1640 in Oakley, Bedfordshire, England, died 16 November 1716 in Beverly, Massachusetts; married on 22 February 1665/6 in Beverly to Sarah Dixey, daughter of William Dixey and Anna Unknown.  She was baptized on 2 July 1643 in Salem, Massachusets and died in 1757 in Beverly.  Thirteen children.

Generation 3:  Sarah Gale, born 4 February 1666 in Beverly, died before 1726;  married to John Stone, son of Nathaniel Stone and Remember Corning.  He was born 20 February 1661 in Salem, and died 28 July 1736 in Beverly.  Ten children.

Surname Saturday ~ DIXEY of Lynn, Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts

DIXEY

William Dixey was an early settler in Essex County.  He arrived in the New World as a servant of Isaac Johnson, an associate of Governor Endicott.  In 1657 Dixey deposed that Johnson wrote to Endicott “for a place to sett downe in”.  Johnson sent his men and cattle ahead to Saugus (Lynn).  In 1680 Dixey gave this deposition about the first settlement:

“William Dixey of Beverly in New England aged about 73 years testifieth that I came to new England & arrived in June 1629 at Cape Ann where we found the signs of buildings & plantation work and saw no English people.  So we sailed to the place now called Salem where we found Mr. John Endicot Governor & sundry inhabitants besides some of whom said they had been servants to Dorchester company & had built at Cape Ann sundry years before we came over.  When we came to dwell here the Indians bid us welcome & showed themselves very glad that we came to dwell among them….”

William Dixey first settled at Salem where his six children were born and baptized, and then he removed to Beverly where he kept the ferry.  His will was dated 1684/5 and proved in 1690.  He named his son and his five married daughters.  In 1688 he wrote a codicil making his son his sole executor of his estate.

My Dixey lineage daughtered out in the next generation, because his middle daughter, Sarah, my 8^th great grandmother, married Edmund Gale.   His son, John Dixey, married Elizabeth Allen, but I don’t know if she is from my Manchester, Massachusetts (Jeffrie’s Creek) Allens or from the Swansea, Massachusetts Allens, where John Dixey removed.   Another daughter, Abigail Dixey, married John Stone, brother of another ancestor, Nathaniel Stone (1632 – 1718), who is the father of the John Stone who married Sarah Gale, Sarah Dixey’s daughter.  See the lineage below for clarification.

Generation 1:  William Dixey, born about 1607 probably in England, died between 11 August 1688 and 24 June 1690 in Beverly, Massachusetts; married to Ann or Hannah Unknown. She died before 1 February 1684/5 when William made his will.  Six children.

Generation 2: Sarah Dixey, baptized 2 July 1643 in Salem, died 1757 in Beverly; married on 22 February 1666 in Beverly to Edmund Gale, son of Edmond Gale.  He was born about 1640 in Oakley, Bedfordshire, England and died 16 November 1716 in Beverly. Thirteen children.

Surname Saturday ~ STONE of Beverly, Massachusetts

STONE

John Stone (about 1595 – about 1670) arrived in Massachusetts in 1635 on board the ship Elizabeth,  with his two sons by his first wife, and with his second wife and her four Haskell children (including William Haskell (1618 – 1693) my 9^th great grandfather in another lineage).    They settled in Beverly, near the head of the Bass River near the present day Cummings Center (formerly the United States Shoe Machinery Company).  

John Stone ran the ferry across the Bass River from Beverly to Salem until 1639.  He removed to Beverly sometime before 1662, and was one of the founding members of the Beverly church in 1667.  His son, Nathaniel (about 1632 – 1718), my 8^th great grandfather, was a constable in Salem in 1667 and was a freeman in 1668.  He died intestate in 1718.   I descend from his two eldest sons, John (1661 – 1736) and Nathaniel (1663 – 1741)- my 7^th great grandfathers (see below).

Generation 1:  John Stone, born about 1595 in England, died between 1667 – 1677; married first to Unknown.  He married second to Elinor, the widow of William Haskell.  Elinor died about 1650 in Beverly.

Generation 2:  Nathaniel Stone, born about 1632 in England, died 8 March 1718 in Salem, Massachusetts; married to Remember Corning, daughter of Samuel Corning and Elizabeth Huntley.  They had eleven children.

Generation 3: John Stone, born 20 February 1661 in Salem, died 28 July 1736 in Beverly; married first to Sarah Gale, daughter of Edmund Gale and Sarah Dixey.  She was born 5 February 1666 in Salem and died before 1726.  Ten children.  John Stone was also married to Hester Gaines and Jane Stacy Stanley.

Generation 4:  Susanna Stone, born 20 August 1702 in Beverly, died 17 May 1751 in Beverly; married on 2 July 1723 in Beverly to Randall Preston, son of William Preston and Priscilla Randall.  He was born on 3 April 1702 in Beverly and died 27 March 1744 in Beverly. Twelve children.

Generation 4:  Josiah Stone, born 27 August 1681 in Beverly, died after 1757, married first to Dorithy Fuller, daughter of James Fuller and Mary Rindge.  She was born 18 December 1684 and died 1756 in Beverly. Six children.  Josiah Stone married second to Elizabeth Simmonds of Boxford, Massachusetts.

Generation 5:  Josiah Stone, born 18 October 1722 in Beverly, died before 20 March 1807 in Beverly; married on 27 December 1759 in Beverly to Martha Ashby, daughter of Ebenezer Ashby and Margery Unknown.  One child.   Josiah was previously married to Mary Davis of Wells, Maine.

Generation 6:  Captain Josiah Stone, born 25 December 1763 in Beverly, died 20 April 1848 in Beverly; married on 25 January 1759 to Susanna Hix, daughter of Abraham Hix and Sarah Matthews.  She was baptized on 17 January 1768 in Beverly, and died 30 May 1859 in Beverly.  Six children.  He was previously married to Mary Wales.

Generation 7:  Eunice Stone, baptized 15 May 1807 in Beverly, died 21 October 1866 in Beverly; married on 30 December 1828 in Beverly to Peter Hoogerzeil, son of Simon Hogerzeil and Lissa Van Epenhuizen.  He was born 28 October 1803 in Dordrecht, Holland and died 12 May 1889 in Beverly.  Six children.
