Theodore Atkinson Goffe was born in Groton, Massachusetts on 25 June 1769, son of Major John Goffe and Jemima Holden.  He was the grandson of Colonel John Goffe (1701 – 1781) who build the historic Goffe’s Mill in 1744, located on Bowman Brook behind the Whole Foods market in Bedford.  Theodore A. Goffe was the great grandson of “Squire John Goffe (1679 – 1748) who removed from Boston to Londonderry, New Hampshire. 

Theodore A. Goffe married Anne Griggs, who was born 19 September 1775 and died 16 September 1859.   Theodore died on 5 November 1860 in Bedford, New Hampshire on his father’s farm.   He is most noted for rebuilding the Goffe mill after a fire damaged it in 1834.  His improvements included an iron turbine to replace the wooden millwheel.

He was the namesake of Colonel Theodore Atkinson (1697 - 1779), Harvard graduate who was appointed secretary of the province of New Hampshire.  The town of Atkinson, New Hampshire, founded in 1767 was named for him. Atkinson’s portrait was painted by Joseph Blackburn in 1760, and it now hangs in the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Generation 2: Squire John Goffe (1677 – 1748) m Hannah Parish (my 1^st cousin 10 generations removed)

Generation 3: Colonel John Goffe (1701 – 1786) m. Hannah Griggs

Generation 4: Major John Goffe (1727 – 1818) m. Jemima Holden.  This John Goffe, was born 16 Feburary 1727 in Londonderry, New Hampshire and died 11 September 1818 in Bedford, New Hampshire; married on 17 September 1749 to Jemima Holden.  They had eleven children!

Colonel John Goffe set up the original sawmill and grainmill on Crosby’s Brook, near the Merrimack River in what is now Bedford, NewHampshire.  The colonel set up his son in the business.  Major John Goffe served in the Revolutionary War, and so did several of his sons.  Two of his sons died in service during the Revolution.  Goffstown and “Goffe’s Falls” are named for Colonel John Goffe.

Family History is Preserved in a New Supermarket, Bedford, New Hampshire

The new Whole Foods Supermarket in Bedford, New Hampshire will open this Friday, April 8th.  I've been watching the process of this new construction very carefully.  It sits on the land that was formerly the Sheraton Wayfarer Inn, and is right next to the John Goffe Mill.  This water powered mill was built by Colonel John Goffe in the 1744.  His home still stands across the street on South River Road (the bank building next to the brook that powers the mill).

John Goffe is my 2nd cousin 8 generations removed.  Both of his grandmothers are  my 9th great aunts (Hannah (Sumner) Goffe b. 1659 and Mercy (Crispe) Parish 1648 - 1686).   His father was also John Goffe (1677 - 1748) who settled in Londonderry, New Hampshire.  John Goff, Jr. (1701 - 1786), who built the mill, was also a veteran of King George's War and the French and Indian War.  He was still alive during the American Revolution.  His widow married David Southwick, the great grandson of Lawrence Southwick and Cassandra Burnell, the persecuted Quakers of Salem, Massachusetts and also my 8th great grandparents.

when there is no more snow! 

This morning I was able to take a "sneak peek" tour of the new supermarket.  It is located at the new Goffe's Mill Plaza.   I had heard that it would incorporate family history and local history from the Goffe family and from the Wayfarer, which had been operated by the Dunfey family.  Inside the supermarket, in the back corner of the building, is a restaurant called "Goffe's Watering Hole".  There are large windows and a back patio over looking the newly restored John Goffe Mill.   The Bedford Historical Society hopes to reopen the mill as a museum in the future (the mill equipment is no longer inside the building).

Generation 1:  John Goffe, born about 1648 probably in England, died 24 July 1716; married Hannah Sumner, daughter of William Sumner and Elizabeth Clement.

Generation 2: "Squire" John Goffe, born 18 September 1677, died 18 September 1748 in Londonderry, New Hampshire; married Hannah Parish, daughter of Robert Parish and Mercy Crispe.

Generation 3: Colonel John Goffe, born 25 March 1701 in Boston, died 20 October 1786 in Derryfield (now Manchester), New Hampshire; married on 16 October 1722 in Roxbury to Hannah Griggs, daughter of Ichabod Griggs and Margaret Bishop. Eight children.

Generation 4: Major John Goffe, born 16 February 1727, died 11 September 1818 in Bedford, New Hampshire; married on 17 September 1748 to Jemima Holden.  Eleven children.

Here is the vital information missing from this broken stone:

John Goffe, son of John Goffe and Hannah Parish, was born 25 March 1701 in Boston, Massachusetts and died 20 October 1786 in Derryfield (now Manchester), New Hampshire.  He is buried at the Old Burial Ground, which is now located in the town of Bedford, New Hampshire.  He married Hannah Griggs on 16 October 1722 in Roxbury, Massachusetts.  She was the daughter of Ichabod Griggs and Margaret Bishop.  Margaret Bishop's grandfather was William Cogswell (1619 - 1700), the brother of my 8th great grandfather, John Cogswell (1622 - 1653).  

Hannah Parish's mother, Mercy Crispe (1648 - 1686) is the sister of my 9th great grandmother, Elizabeth Crispe Lawrence (1637- 1681).
