A Mermaid! For Weathervane Wednesday

Today's weathervane was photographed in Falmouth, Massachusetts

This two dimensional mermaid weathervane was photographed on the cupola above the entrance to the Osborn and Rugh art gallery in Falmouth, Massachusetts.  It is one of those quirky New England businesses with no set time schedule, just open when you see the flag outside the front door, or by an appointment arranged ahead of time.  The mermaid is holding a seashell, and the cardinal points below seem to be tied to the cupola with a large link from a chain? Or a serpent?  It's all a mystery...

A Book and Quill in Falmouth, Massachusetts - Weathervane Wednesday

 This weathervane was photographed in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

This weathervane is located at 352 Main Street in Falmouth, Massachusetts. It is a very elaborate three-dimensional book with a sewn-in ribbon book marker with fringe, and a large quill pen to the left.  Somehow, this book weathervane seems incongruous with a jewelry business, which makes me think that perhaps this location was previously a book shop or a stationary store?  There is a beautiful patina to this weathervane, which means that it was not erected here recently. 

This weathervane is very beautiful and intricately constructed. You can view it from up and down Main Street, as well as from the parking lot in front of the jewelry store.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - Weathervane Wednesday

 Today's weathervane was photographed in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution was established in 1930 for the study of marine science and engineering. You may remember the WHOI mentioned in the movie Titanic.  They maintain a fleet of research vessels that are berthed in Woods Hole on Cape Cod, as well as smaller vessels and underwater vehicles such as Alvin and the Deepsea Challenger from the movie Titanic, donated by the film maker James Cameron.    

There are two campuses for the WHOI, both in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.  The original buildings are located near and round Water Street in Woods Hole Village.  A second campus is located nearby, called the Quissett Campus, on Woods Hole Road closer to Falmouth.  Currently the Visitor Center and the Discovery Center are closed to visitors due to the COVID pandemic. 

The Bigelow building was the first laboratory built for the Institution in 1930.  It is located right on Water Street in the center of the campus. This three dimensional Viking ship is extremely detailed.  According to the Woods Hole museum, no one knows the symbolism of the Viking ship.

The Goddess Estia - Weathervane Wednesday

 This weathervane was photographed in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

This weathervane depicts "Estia" or "Hestia", the Greek goddess of the home and hearth.  She was the eldest daughter of the Titans Rhea and Cronus.  The Romans called her "Vesta".  

The Estia restaurant in Falmouth is well known for its Greek cuisine.  Food is cooked over open hearth coal ovens.  There is a second Estia restaurant at the Mashpee Commons nearby.  

We were in Falmouth recently and just as the sun was setting we drove down Main Street.  The setting sun glinted off this weathervane and lit up Estia's copper robes and her gilded flame.  It was beautiful!

Surname Saturday ~ GREEN of Malden, Massachusetts

I have another GREEN ancestor I have already featured at this blog, Bartholomew Green (about 1590 – 1636) of Cambridge, Massachusetts.  They do not appear to be kin.

Thomas Green, my 9^th great grandfather, arrived in Massachusetts aboard the ship Planter in 1635/6.  In 1646 he was living at Lady Deborah Moody’s farm in Lynn, Massachusetts, and by 1650 he was a resident of Malden.  He had a 63 acre farm located in what is now the Melrose and Wakefield border.  He was a farmer, and was elected a selectman in 1658, and a juror several times for Middlesex County.

There were two Thomas Greens living in Malden at this time.  This Thomas Green is called “senior” and his son is “Thomas Green junior”.  The other Thomas Green had no suffix after his name.  My ancestor Thomas Green left a will dated 12 November 1667, proven on 15 January 1667/8.  It doesn’t name his wife, but it names all his children.

Two of his children are my ancestors. His son William, my 8^th great grandfather, was born in 1625 and settled in Malden.  He was a freeman in 1668, selectman in 1678, 1683, and 1702.  His son, Isaac Green, my 7^th great grandfather, left Malden and settled in Falmouth, on Cape Cod, where he is buried. I descend from his daughter, Martha, born in 1705, my 6^th great grandmother who married Peter Robinson, the great great grandson of Rev. John Robinson, pastor to the pilgrims.

Thomas’s daughter, Hannah Green (1647 – 1721) is also my 8^th great great grandmother. She married Joseph Richardson and removed to the town of Woburn, which was settled by Malden and Charlestown residents.    Joseph Richardson was a member of Major Samuel Appleton’s militia and was engaged in the Great Swamp Fight on 19 December 1675.  They had five children.

Generation 3A: Isaac Green, born about 1666 in Malden, died 4 January 1739/40 in Falmouth, Massachusetts; married about 1693 to Sarah Unknown as his first wife (six children); married second on 6 August 1716 in Falmouth to Judith Betell.

Surname Saturday ~ HICKS / HIX of Cape Cod and Beverly, Massachusetts

Susanna Hix (1768 – 1859), my 4^th great grandmother, was a mystery to me because I could not find a vital record that listed her parents.  It was not until I recently looked at the Beverly town clerk records and I found her parents, Abraham and Sarah Hix, listed with their children.  I also found a surprise that helped me find the origins of the parents!  I found a warning out in the town clerk records “Dec. 19, 1757, a warrant was issued to warn Abraham Hix to depart out of the town he being an inhabitant of Plimoth in the County of Plimoth”!

Apparently Abraham didn’t leave and return to Plymouth, for he appears in Captain John Tapley’s militia company in Beverly in 1758, and three children’s births were registered in Beverly in 1759, 1761 and Susanna in 1768. 

In researching the Plymouth records I found that Abraham Hix had been previously married to Bathsheba Donham on 11 July 1751 in Plymouth. Her death was recorded in Plymouth on 22 June 1756.  He must have removed to Beverly soon after this.

Abraham Hix appears to be the son of Abraham Hicks and Desire Trowbridge, who were married on 10 February 1723/24 in Falmouth, Massachusetts.  I have not found Abraham, Jr’s birth record in Falmouth, but there were three other siblings recorded there.  His wife, Sarah Matthews, my 5^th great grandmother, is also a mystery.  I don’t know her origins, birth or death.  Interestingly, Sarah and Abraham were married on 18 May 1757 in Salem, New Hampshire.

I also found in the Beverly Town Clerk records that Susanna Hix had an illegitimate daughter with Josiah Lovett on 31 January 1790.  She married my 4^th great grandfather, Captain Josiah Stone, on 25 January 1795 and had six children.  I have found no further records on the Lovett child. 

Susanna’s husband was a sea captain.  Family lore is that he was transporting a shipment of hemp from Rotterdam, Holland to the ropeworks in Salem and there was a young Dutch stowaway on board.  This young man, Peter Hoogerzeil, married his daughter, Eunice Stone, my 3^rd great grandmother.

Is there anyone out there researching the HICKS / HIX family of Cape Cod and Plymouth?  I’d love to know the origins of Abraham Hix’s family.

His son, William Greene, my 9x great grandfather, was born in Topsfield in 1635 and settled also in Malden.  He was made a freeman in Malden in 1668 and was a selectman in 1678, 1683, and 1702.   Thomas’s grandson, Isaac Green, my 8x great grandfather, left Malden and settled in Falmouth, on Cape Cod, where he is buried.
