Joseph Cogswell, son of Jonathan Cogswell and Mary Appleton, was born 1 December 1757 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and died 22 November 1843 in Derry, New Hampshire.  He married Abigail Cleveland, daughter of the Rev. John Cleaveland and Mary Dodge, on 21 May 1788 in Ipswich, Massachusetts.  Both Joseph and I are descendants of the original immigrant Cogswell family, John Cogswell (1592 – 1669) and Elizabeth Thompson, from Westbury Leigh, Wiltshire, England. 

Abigail Cleveland Cogswell, his wife, was born 28 December 1762 in Ipswich, Massachusetts and died 11 April 1824 in Londonderry, New Hampshire.  The town of Londonderry split into the two towns of Londonderry and Derry in the time between the two deaths.  Abigail’s mother was Mary Dodge, who was my first cousin 8 generations removed.  Mary’s mother was Mary Choate, my 8^th great aunt, married to Parker Dodge and sister of Anne (Choate) Varney (1691 – 1739), my 7^th great grandmother.

This tombstone also lists their daughter, Mary, who died in 1844.  Joseph and Abigail had seventeen children!  Elisabeth, Jonathan, David, Joseph II, John Cleveland, Abigail, Abigail again, Mary C., a third Abigail, Thomas, Elisabeth again, Moses, Aaron, Thomas again, Ebenezer, William, and Edward Parker. 

This was originally a standing stone, but it now lies flat on the ground in the Forest Hill Cemetery in East Derry, New Hampshire.  It is broken in at least three places.

William Woodbury, son of William Woodbury and Joanna Wheeler, was born 11 July 1697 in Beverly, and died 16 November 1788 in Beverly.  On 2 September 1720 in Beverly he married, as his second wife, Martha Woodbury, daughter of Ebenezer Woodbury and Hannah Dodge.  They were third cousins. William was a miller. They had eleven children:

This tombstone has been defaced by someone who sprayed or painted blue paint on the winged soul effigy on Hannah Dodge's carved stone.  I photographed this during a tour of the Old North Beverly Cemetery with members of the Beverly Historical Society and they said an attempt would be made to clean this tombstone.

Hannah Raymond was the daughter of George Raymond and Jerusha Woodbury of Beverly, Massachusetts.  She was born 24 February 1699/1700 in Beverly, and died there on 31 May 1783.  She married Deacon Joshua Dodge in Beverly on 14 June 1716.  He was the son of Joshua Dodge and Joanna Larkin, born 23 September 1694 in Beverly, and died there 20 December 1771.  They had twelve children, all listed in the town clerks record in Beverly (see below).

Every two years the Beverly Historical Society hosts the "Old Planters Reunion" for descendants of the first settlers in what is now Beverly, Massachusetts.   This weekend was a three day event that included historic house tours, cemetery visits, lectures, a visit to the city hall archivists, a dinner at the Hale Farm, the annual Balch and Woodbury family reunions, and other events. We had a wonderful time in Beverly meeting lots of cousins and having fun.  I'm descended of a lot of these "Old Planters" including BALCH, BLACK, DODGE, DIXEY, ELLINWOOD, GALE, HASKELL, HERRICK, LEACH, STONE, THORNDIKE, WEST, TUCK and WOODBURY.

Dinner in the backyard of the Hale Farm.  It was built in 1694 by Rev. John Hale
who played a large part in the 1692 Salem Witch Hysteria. 

We toured the Old North Beverly burial ground and also the
well hidden Dodges Burial Ground, and found lots of ancestors!

We finished the weekend with a tour of the Beverly "Gold Coast"
on the schooner "Fame".

Lots of cousins helped to lift the sails for our tour of Beverly Harbor.

Stephen Dodge, son of Amos Dodge and Lydia Batchelder, born in Wenham, Massachusetts on 2 August 1792;  filed the intention to marry Sally Grant on 26 October 1816 in Wenham, daughter of Joseph Grant and Betsey Balch.  She was born on 27 April 1795 in Beverly, Massachusetts.  They had nine children, listed below.  Sally died on 29 February 1836 in Wenham, Massachusetts (the border of Wenham and Beverly is very near the Dodge's Row Cemetery).  

Nine children, named Dodge, all born in Wenham:

1. Emeline  b. 1817

2. Francis Stephen, b. 1819

3. Charles Smith b. 1821 (see above, died at age 14)

4. Joseph Grant, b. 1823

5. Sally Elizabeth, b. 1825

6. John Henry, b. 1828

7. Lydia A., b. 1831

8. George Frederik, b. 1833

9. Lydia A., b. 1835

Sally and three of her children all died in 1835 and 1836.  That was the year of a typhoid pneumonia epidemic in Massachusetts.  The vital records of Wenham don't list a cause of death, but perhaps they were all victims of this terrible disease.

Antipas Dodge, son of David Dodge and Mary Esgate, was born 5 March 1738 in Brookfield, Massachusetts.  He received a grant of land, from his father, of 100 acres in the third lot, second range, south of the Piscataquog River in Goffstown, New Hampshire where he settled with his family.  His first wife was Anna Ramsey, of Londonderry, and his second wife was Molly Arwyne. He had six children: Martha, Mary, James, Margaret, Antipas and Abijah.  Antipas Dodge died in Pembroke, New Hampshire on 4 July 1834, so you can see that the age carved onto his gravestone is a great exaggeration.  [He was really about 93 years old when he died – a ripe old age indeed!]

Antipas Dodge had a grandfather, Antipas Dodge, and his great grandfather was Samuel Dodge (1645 - 1705).  Samuel’s sister was Mary, who married Zachary Herrick (1636 – 1695), my 10^th great uncle.  Zachary was the brother to my 10^th great grandfather,  Henry Herrick (1640 – 1702).

Antipas Dodge served in the Revolutionary War.  You can see the DAR flag holder in the photograph, as well as the letters REV painted on the lower right corner of his gravestone.  I’ve only seen these letters painted on gravestones in this cemetery in Goffstown, and it seems to me to be a controversial action.  His Revolutionary War service is outlined in the Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, Volume 4, page 1642:

“Antipas Dodge, of Watertown, also given as of Ware and Brookfield, Massachusetts, was a private in Captain Thomas Wellington’s company, Colonel Asa Whitcomb’s regiment. His name is on the must roll dated Camp at Ticonderoga, November 27, 1776.  He enlisted October 1, 1776, and ins reported re-engaged November 16, 1776, in Captain Brewer’s company, Colonel Brewer’s regiment but to remain in Colonel Whitcomb’s regiment until December 31, 1776.  His name is also on the return of men raised to serve in the Continental army from Fourth Company, Colonel Converse’s (4^th Worcester Co.) regiment sworn to by Lieutenant Jonathan Snow, at Brookfield, February 20, 1778.  His residence was given as Ware.  He engaged for the town of Brookfield (also given as New Braintree), and joined Captain Harwood’s company, Colonel Nixon’s regiment, for a term of three years.  He is also enumerated as a privaten Major’s company, Colonel Ebenezer Sprout’s regiment: continental pay accounts for service from January 1, 1777, to December 31, 1779.  His residence is given as Watertown.  His name also appears in Captain Brewer’s company, Colonel Brewer’s report on the muster returns dated Camp Valley Forge, January 23, 1778, and his residence given as Brookfield:  enlisted for the town of Brookfield, and was mustered in by the state muster master.  He is also on the descriptive list of deserters from the corps of guards, as returned by C. Gibbs, major commandant, dated Headquarters, Morristown, New Jersey, May 22, 1780; age twenty years; statue five feet six inches; complexion dark; occupation hatter; engaged for the town of Watertown for the term of the war;  deserted February 8, 1780.  It seems that after arduous service for between three and four years he went home, as many others did, and failed to return to his command.”

Rose Webber, daughter of Edward Webber and Sarah Newman, was born 17 November 1734 in Ipswich, and died 13 August 1826 in Wenham.  Her marriage to Stephen Dodge was published in the Wenham records in May 1757.

Deacon Stephen Dodge, son of Phineas Dodge and Sarah Whipple,  was born 21 May 1736 in Wenham and died 12 March 1816 in Wenham.  His will was proved on 9 April 1816 and he named his wife, Rose, as executrix, but she declined to serve.  His estate was valued at about $4,000.  He had two daughters, Hepzibah and Anna, both died young.

Nicholas Dodge, son of Nicholas Dodge and Hannah Cole, was born 1 July 1777 in Wenham, Massachusetts.  He married first to Lydia Cleaves on 23 May 1801 in Wenham.  She died on 27 September 1805.  He married second to Prudence Edwards on 21 July 1808 in Wenham, and had eight children.  Nicholas Dodge died on 2 November 1857 in Wenham and was buried  next to his two wives at the Dodge’s Row Burying Ground in North Beverly.  [I didn't photograph Lydia's tombstone]. 

Prudence Edwards was born 1 May 1789 in Wenham, Massachusetts, the daughter of Abraham Edwards and Prudence Dodge.  She is my distant cousin through our common Allen, Herrick, Tuck, Browning and Williams ancestors.

John Dodge was born 3 December 1740 in Wenham, Massachusetts, the son of Captain Richard Dodge and Mary Thorne.  He married Anna Porter on 15 May 1760.  She was the daughter of Samuel Porter, born on 4 December 1736.   Anna is a distant cousin to me through her great grandmother, Lydia Herrick, my 9^th great grand aunt.  John and Anna had six children- John 1761, Anna 1762, Billy 1765, Isaac 1766, Marcy 1769, and Sarah1770.   Captain John Dodge served in the American Revolution [ see Massachusetts Soldier and Sailors, Volume 4, page 826, and also DAR ancestor #A135137] and he died on 15 March 1811 in Wenham.

Knowlton on 17 November 1834 in Wenham.  Augustus died 2 February 1858 in Wenham and is buried next to Martha in the Dodge’s Row Burying Ground in North Beverly.  He is a distant cousin to me through his Woodbury and his Herrick ancestors. 

Martha Knowlton was born 20 August 1815, daughter of Ivers Knowlton and Sarah Patch.  She was born 20 August 1815 and died 10 October 1878 in Hamilton. She is a distant cousin to me through her Dane, Kimball, Friend, and Balch ancestors. She was also a descendant of the Mayflower passenger, Richard More (1614 - about 1696).

Clues to finding Dodge’s Row Burying Ground, Beverly, Massachusetts

Dodge's Row Burying Ground, off Dodge Street, Beverly, Massachusetts

I dare you to find this little gem of a cemetery!  Even with a map, a GPS and a written description of how to find this cemetery we had a lot of trouble finding this cemetery.  “Dodge, shared right of way on right and driveways on left, opposite and in between Norwood’s and Beaver Pond Roads (North Beverly), park in cemetery.”  These were the only clues I could find online at the Beverly, Massachusetts US GenWeb Project.  

There are no signs off Dodge Street to tell you where to turn, and even once you pull into a private home driveway you are faced with several signs stating “PRIVATE DRIVE”, but you have to be brave enough to drive right through on the driveway, which is really a right-of-way through private property to the burying ground.

It was only later when we pulled up Google Earth’s satellite images of Dodge Street in Beverly and carefully viewed the woods between and behind the houses along the road- when we found it!  It's well hidden, but worth the drive if you have North Beverly ancestors.  The oldest stone I found was 1705.  The newest one I saw read 1922.  Many are broken or illegible. 

Here is a screen shot of how this cemetery looks via satellite image on an iPhone.  You can see the cemetery in the woods to the left of the tree farm (which is a big clue to finding this burying ground).  The private drive way is between two houses, with two more homes behind them on the way to the cemetery.  Be brave and keep driving!

Daniel Dodge was the son of Daniel Dodge (1710 - 1756)  and Jerusha Herrick.   Daniel Dodge's paternal grandparents were Daniel Dodge (1677 - 1740) and Joanna Burnham.  Joanna's father was James Burnham (1650 - 1729), the brother of my 8th great grandfather, John Burnham (1648 - 1704).  

Jerusha Herrick's grandfather was Peter Woodbury (1640 - 1704), my 10th great uncle, and half brother to Humphrey Woodbury (1609 - 1686), my 11th great grandfather. 

Daniel Dodge was married twice.  His first wife was Martha Moody, who gave him five children born in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He then married Mary Dudley, the widow of Porter Kimball.  

The image of the Dodge Family Register is from a notecard sold in a set of stationary by the New England Historic Genealogical Society.  The Dodge register is part of their collections.  This set of stationary was a gift to me from my husband, who had no idea that one of the notecards depicted a Dodge from my family tree!

Generation   : Richard Dodge, born about 1602 in Middlechinnock, Somerset, England, died 15 June 1671 in Beverly, Massachusetts; married to Edith. 

Generation   : Richard Dodge, born 1644 in Beverly, Massachusetts, died 13 April 1705 in Wenham, Massachusetts; married on 23 February 1668 to Mary Eaton.  Mary is my 1st cousin 9 generations removed.  Her father William Eaton (1604 - 1658) was the brother of my 8th great grandfather, Jonas Eaton (1617 - 1673), of Reading, Massachusetts.

A Furniture Label leads to some old Ancestors!

My grandfather's sister, Janet Wilkinson Blades (1898 - 1981) owned this pretty little sewing table at her home in Beverly, Massachusetts.  I blogged about this house at this link last year http://nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com/2011/01/house-built-in-1676-by-william-woodbury.html  where I told the tale of how Janet, in her declining years, gave away all her furniture and possession from this 1676 era home.  Several pieces of furniture were taken to her retirement apartment in Beverly, and after her death in 1981 these few pieces were divided up amongst family members.  I have a small bedroom rocking chair from Auntie Janet, and my mother has this little sewing table.

Last week Mom was cleaning drawers, and took one and turned it upside down to empty the contents onto the bed when she saw, for the first time, this label pasted onto the bottom.  Isn't it funny how something she owned for thirty years can yield up clues to it's past?

I'm proud to say that Mom, who is not the most computer literate person in the family, Googled the name of "C. Dodge" and the word "Manchester".  Her Google search led to finding the website for the Winterthur Museum which held the papers for the Cyrus Dodge Furniture Company.  The Winterthur Museum is in Delaware, but their online archive gave her many clues to the origins of this little sewing table.   Mom called me immediately with all her news.

Over the weekend we visited Mom and took these photos.  I also took some time to look at what Mom uncovered on Google.  Dodge is a name that comes up a lot in my family tree, since the original Dodge immigrant ancestors were brothers who immigrated to Beverly in the 1600's.  There are many, many Dodge marriages in our genealogy.  Cyrus Dodge (1814 - 1887) was a descendant of this same Dodge family.  

In reading the Wintherthur records, I saw that Cyrus Dodge was an apprentice to John Perry Allen.  This Allen furniture builder built a mill to saw veneers on the creek right across from where my aunt lives now in Manchester-by-the-Sea, and very close to where my cousins are rennovating the Forster Leach House.  In fact, John Perry Allen's son was named George Forster Allen!  Well, my Mom is an Allen with roots in Manchester, and with a little digging I found that John Perry Allen was a cousin!

Now I just have to send my photos to Winterthur Museum to see if they can help me to date the little sewing table.  The C. Dodge Furniture company was operated between 1841 and 1965, which is a very long time!  It would be nice to see if it dates from before Janet's wedding in 1927, for it possibly belonged to her mother, Isabella Lyons (Bill) Wilkinson (1863 - 1935), or her grandmother, Phebe Cross (Munroe) Wilkinson (1830 - 1895).
