Surname Saturday ~ GREEN of Malden, Massachusetts

I have another GREEN ancestor I have already featured at this blog, Bartholomew Green (about 1590 – 1636) of Cambridge, Massachusetts. They do not appear to be kin.

Thomas Green, my 9^th great grandfather, arrived in Massachusetts aboard the ship Planter in 1635/6. In 1646 he was living at Lady Deborah Moody’s farm in Lynn, Massachusetts, and by 1650 he was a resident of Malden. He had a 63 acre farm located in what is now the Melrose and Wakefield border. He was a farmer, and was elected a selectman in 1658, and a juror several times for Middlesex County.

There were two Thomas Greens living in Malden at this time. This Thomas Green is called “senior” and his son is “Thomas Green junior”. The other Thomas Green had no suffix after his name. My ancestor Thomas Green left a will dated 12 November 1667, proven on 15 January 1667/8. It doesn’t name his wife, but it names all his children.

Two of his children are my ancestors. His son William, my 8^th great grandfather, was born in 1625 and settled in Malden. He was a freeman in 1668, selectman in 1678, 1683, and 1702. His son, Isaac Green, my 7^th great grandfather, left Malden and settled in Falmouth, on Cape Cod, where he is buried. I descend from his daughter, Martha, born in 1705, my 6^th great grandmother who married Peter Robinson, the great great grandson of Rev. John Robinson, pastor to the pilgrims.

Thomas’s daughter, Hannah Green (1647 – 1721) is also my 8^th great great grandmother. She married Joseph Richardson and removed to the town of Woburn, which was settled by Malden and Charlestown residents. Joseph Richardson was a member of Major Samuel Appleton’s militia and was engaged in the Great Swamp Fight on 19 December 1675. They had five children.

My GREEN genealogy:

Generation 1: Thomas Green, born in England, died 19 December 1667 in Malden, Massachusetts; married on 26 June 1627 in Malden to Elizabeth Unknown. She had ten children. He married second Frances Watson, the widow of Isaac Wheeler and Richard Cook.

Lineage A:

Generation 2A: William Green, born 15 December 1635 in England; died 30 December 1705 in Malden; married on 13 March 1659 in Malden to Elizabeth Wheeler as his first wife (the daughter of Isaac Wheeler and Frances Watson, she had six children); married second on 6 February 1695 to Isabel Farmer, daughter of John Farmer and Isabella Burbage (she had no children).

Generation 3A: Isaac Green, born about 1666 in Malden, died 4 January 1739/40 in Falmouth, Massachusetts; married about 1693 to Sarah Unknown as his first wife (six children); married second on 6 August 1716 in Falmouth to Judith Betell.

Generation 4A1: William Green, born 20 November 1696 in Malden, died about 1773 in Falmouth; married 26 May 1726 in Falmouth to Joanna Mendall, daughter of John Mendall and Joanna Standike. She was born 13 May 1690 in Rochester, Massachusetts; and died before 3 May 1773.

Generation 5A1: Tabitha Green, born 18 December 1726 in Falmouth; married on 7 January 1748 to Jabez Robinson, son of Peter Robinson and Martha Green (see below). He was born 9 June 1726 in Falmouth. Five children.

Generation 4A2: Martha Green, born 28 October 1705 in Falmouth; married on 18 July 1724 in Falmouth to Peter Robinson, son Of Isaac Robinson and Hannah Harper. He was born 15 December 1701 in Falmouth, and died after 1772. Seven children.

Generation B2: Hannah Green, born 7 February 1647 in Woburn, Massachusetts, and died 20 May 1721 in Norwich, Connecticut; married on 5 November 1666 in Woburn to Joseph Richardson, son of Samuel Richardson and Joanna Thake. He was born 27 July 1643 in Woburn, and died 5 March 1718 in Woburn. Five children.

Surname Saturday ~ LYNDE of Charlestown, Massachusetts

LYNDE

Thomas Lynde was from Dunstable in the county of Bedfordshire in England. He arrived in Massachusetts on the ship Griffin, along with his pregnant third wife and two sons. The ship arrived in Boston on 18 September 1634, and the Lynde family settled in Charlestown, just across the harbor. He was made a freeman on 4 March 1635 and was a representative to the General Court in 1636, 1637, 1646 and several more years. He was also a selectman and deacon of the First Church in Malden.

I descend from two of Thomas Lynde’s daughters by his first wife, Elizabeth. You can read more about Thomas Lynde in the book The Great Migration, by Robert Charles Anderson, Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2005, Volume IV, pages 369 – 378.

Generation 1: Thomas Lynde, born about 1597 in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, England, died 30 December 1671 in Charlestown, Massachusetts; married first Mary Unkown; married second to Elizabeth Unknown; married third on 8 October 1633 in Malden, Massachusetts to Margaret Martin, daughter of John Martin. One child with Mary, three children with Elizabeth, and six children with Margaret. He married last to Rebecca Trerice on 6 December 1665 in Charlestown.

Generation 2: Elizabeth Lynde, daughter of Thomas Lynde and Elizabeth Unknown, born between 1607 and 1610 in England; married on 26 June 1627 in Hertfordshire, England to Thomas Green, son of John Greene and Ann Scargell. He was born 17 May 1606 in Kegworth, Leicestershire, England. Ten children.

Surname Saturday ~ BUTLER of Martha's Vineyard

Nicholas Butler, my 11^th great grandfather, arrived in Massachusetts in June 1637 aboard the ship Hercules with his wife, children and five servants. He lived at first at Dorchester, and his son, Henry, went to Harvard College. By 1651 the Butler family was in Edgartown, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Nicholas was a magistrate and later assistant to the chief magistrate. He is called Mr. Butler in the records, and Governor Thomas Mayhew signed his will.

Nicholas Butler signed a brief will on 12 August 1671 and died the next day. His will has a note “his sight as it were gon” and he signed with a mark, which might mean he had gone blind at this time. His short will does not name any children, and he leaves permission for his wife to decide how his estate will be divided. His wife left a longer will in 1689 which named her grandchildren.

This doth testify that I Nicholas Butler Being at present Sound in memory doe Now by this my last will give my Estate Whatsoever that I left after I Shall be buried like a Christian wholly unto my wife Joyce Butler, uppon serious consideration for her to dispose of to hir children and my children as shee shall see good, and hereunto I praise [god] being of memorie as aforesaid Sound. I doe witness with my hand this 12th of August 1671.

In the second generation, Henry the Harvard graduate returned to England, and John was the only son to remain in New England and produce descendants. John is my 10^th great grandfather. He died very young, but had five children. His son, John, my 9^th great grandfather, was born in Dorchester and lived in Edgartown on the Great Neck. He was called a gentleman and captain in the records. The next John, my 8^th great grandfather, lived in Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard.

Generation 2: John Butler, born before 2 January 1625 in Dorchester, Massachusetts; died in 1658 in Edgartown; married about 1648 to Mary Lynde, daughter of Thomas Lynde and Elizabeth Unknown. She was born about 1629 and died after 1693 in Edgartown. Five children.

Generation 3: John Butler, born about 1650 in Dorchester, died between 10 November 1733 and 2 October 1738 in Edgartown; married to Priscilla Norton, daughter of Nicholas Norton and Elizabeth Isaac. Twelve children.

Generation 4: John Butler, born about 1674 and died after 6 February 1754; married on 16 December 1708 in Edgartown to Elizabeth Daggett, daughter of Thomas Daggett and Elizabeth Hawes. She was born about 1690 and died after 1754. Six children.

Generation 5: Keziah Butler, born 1710 in Edgartown, died in October 1768 in Edgartown; married first to Samuel Osborn on 9 September 1731 in Edgartown; married in 1752 to Matthew Pease, son of Matthew Pease and Mary Green. He was born 5 June 1707 in Edgartown, and died about 1756 in Edgartown.
