Tombstone Tuesday ~ Mary (Batchelder) Preston, buried 1758 Beverly, Massachusetts

This tombstone was photographed at the Abbott Hale Burying Ground in Beverly, Massachusetts (also known as the Ancient Burying Ground or Abbott Street Cemetery)

Here lies ye Body of
Mrs MARY PRESSON
wife of Mr. STEPHEN
PRESSON who Died
Novr. 24th 1758
in ye 25th year
of her age.

Mary Batchelder, daughter of Nathaniel Batchelder and Anna Meacham, was born in Beverly, Massachusetts in 1733.  She married Stephen Preston (AKA PRESSON) on 25 March 1755 in Beverly, the son of Nehemiah Preston and Abigail Allen.  Mary died on 24 November 1758 and Stephen died a month later on 23 December 1758.  He was about 28 years old and Mary was only about 25 years old.  They had two children, Mary (born 1756) and Stephen (born 1758).  Stephen died in 1759 as an infant.  I don't know what happened to little Mary.

Stephen Preston was my 6th great grand uncle, and I descend from his sister Hannah Preston (1722 - 1812) who married Robert Woodbury.   I'm also related to Stephen Preston through our common ALLEN, WILLIAMS, TUCK, and BROWNING ancestors.  I'm related to Mary Batchelder through our common WOODBURY, WINDOW, HERRICK, and HUNTER ancestors.  Mary is descended from John Batchelder (1604 - 1675), and early Salem settler, not from my ancestor Rev. Stephen Batchelder of Hampton, New Hampshire.  These two early New England settlers are probably not related.

Surname Saturday ~ IRONS of Boston, Massachusetts

IRONS / INES / IANS / IYANS / JYANS / IANSE

Matthew Irons’ origins are unknown.  It is difficult to trace him in the records because of the many inventive spellings of his surname.  However, when I pronounce IRONS with my Yankee New England accent, it becomes easy to figure out why his name was spelled so many ways.  Just drop the “R”.

Matthew arrived as a servant to William Colbron, and  was made a freeman in Boston in 1636 as “IVES”.   He was an innkeeper in Boston, and granted eight acres at Muddy River (what is now the Fenway and Brookline).  He left a will on 30 January 1661/2 that named some of his children, and an inventory was taken on 16 April 1661.  He had eleven children in the Boston vital records and church records (baptisms) with his wife, Anne, who was probably the sister to Watertown settlers Edmund and Abraham Browne.  [Great Migration Begins, volume II, page 1059].

I descend from the eldest daughter, Elizabeth who married Richard Randall.  They settled on Cape Porpoise in what is now Saco, Maine.  One of her daughters, Sarah also married a Saco settler, Joseph Cole. Sarah Cole and her three daughters were captured by Indians on 20 August 1703 and taken to Montreal.  The children remained in Canada and were baptized by the Catholic Church. Sarah returned to Beverly, Massachusetts with her sister, Priscilla and they lived together as widows.

I descend from Priscilla Randall, sister to the captive Sarah Randall Cole, who married William Preston. They had nine children, and I descend from two sons, Nehemiah and Randall Preston.  Both lived in Beverly, Massachusetts, the town where I was born on this date (Yes, today is my birthday!)

Surname Saturday ~ RANDALL of Saco, Maine

1872 Map of Cape Porpoise, Maine

RANDALL

My 8th great grandfather, Richard Randall (about 1633 – 1713) is a mystery to me.  There are no new articles about him listed in Martin Hollick’s New Englanders in the 1600s, nor are there any Randall family articles in the journals in the NEHGS database collections.   He arrived too late to have a sketch in The Great Migration series.  He has brief mentions in local histories of Saco and York County, Maine.   There are brief mentions in books like The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (page 576).

I’ve had to piece together the life of Richard Randall from vital records, court records and the local histories.  My line daughters out right away, since I descend from his daughter Priscilla, but it was a struggle to learn anything about the Randall family.

Richard Randall settled in Cape Porpoise by 1658.  He was in the town records for serving as constable in 1688 and selectman in 1688 – 1689.  He married Elizabeth Irons and had three children.  His daughter Sarah was married with children when she was captured by Indians and taken to Montreal. She became a Catholic, and her daughters took the names Madeleine and Therese and married two French Catholics and stayed in Montreal.  Sarah returned, and remarried.  Later, when Sarah was widowed, she lived with her widowed sister Priscilla, my 7th great grandmother, in Beverly, Massachusetts.

In 1727 these two widowed sisters went to court as the only heirs of Richard Randall.  The record states they were “…the Children & only Heirs of Mr. Richard Rundal late of Cape Porpus Mariner…”.   [From York Deeds, by the Maine Genealogical Society, Book 12, Part 1, page 177.   They inherited his land.  This is interesting, because it also means that their brother was dead and left no heirs.

Priscilla Randall (about 1661 – 1752) married William Preston of Beverly and had nine children.  I descend from two sons, Nehemiah and Randall Preston.

My RANDALL genealogy:

Generation 1: Richard Randall, born about 1633 probably in England, died after 1713 in Saco, Maine; married to Elizabeth Irons, daughter of Matthew Irons and Anna Brown.  She was born 15 April 1641 in Boston, Massachusetts, and died about 1701 in Saco, Maine.  Three children.

Generation 2:  Priscilla Randall, born about 1661 in Saco, Maine, died 23 April 1752 in Beverly, Massachusetts;  married to William Preston/Presson/Presbury, son of John Presbury and Dorcas Besse.  He was born about 1664 and died about 1718 in Beverly, Massachusetts.  Nine children.

Lineage A:

Generation 3:  Nehemiah Preston married Abigail Allen
Generation 4:  Hannah Preston married Robert Woodbury
Generation 5:  Molly Woodbury married Westley Burnham

Lineage A1:

Generation 6:  Asa Burnham married Polly Bray
Generation 7:  Lydia W. Burnham married Samuel Mears
Generation 8:  Samuel Mears married Sarah Ann Burnham
Generation 9:  Sarah Burnham Mears married Joseph Gilman Allen
Generation 10: Joseph Elmer Allen married Carrie Maude Batchelder
Generation 11: Stanley Elmer Allen married Gertrude Matilda Hitchings (my grandmother)

Lineage A2:

Generation 6: Henry Burnham married Sally Poland
Generation 7:  Sarah Ann Burnham married Samuel Mears (see above)

Generation 3: Randall Preston married Susanna Stone
Generation 4:  William Presson married Abigail Sargent

Surname Saturday ~ PRESBURY/PRESBYTER/PRESBITERY/PRESTON/PRESSON of Sandwich, Martha's Vineyard, Beverly, Massachusetts and of Saco, Maine

PRESBURY   PRESBYTER   PRESBITERY   PRESTON  PRESSON

John Presbury’s (about 1610 - 1648) first appearance in a New England record is on the Sandwich, Massachusetts 1643 list of men “able to bear arms”.  His widow, Catherine,  remarried to Richard Chadwell on 22 July 1648 in Sandwich.

John Presbury, Jr. (about 1640 - before 1679) married Dorcas Besse in 1664 went to Martha’s Vineyard, Salisbury, and to Saco, Maine in 1670.  He was a shoemaker.  In the third generation, William Preston (about 1664 - about 1718) married Priscilla Randall of Saco,  and lived there until about 1690.  King William's War with the Indians and French created many hostilities in the Maine settlements, which drove many settlers back to Massachusetts.  William and Priscilla removed to Beverly, Massachusetts.

Randall Preston (1702 – 1744) was in the fourth generation in New England.  He was a tailor in Beverly.  He married Susannah Stone, a descendant of Nathaniel Stone (1632 - 1718) from whom I also descend in another Stone lineage.  In some records he was known as Randal Presson.  He was baptized as an adult in 1727, which was unusual in Puritan Massachusetts.

William Presson (1737 – 1814) settled at Gloucester, Massachusetts and married Abigail Sargent.  He was also a tailor.  His death was recorded in the Salem Gazette on 27 December 1814 with the words “Died – At Gloucester, Mr. William Preston, aged 78 – an honest man.”   My Preston line daughters out with William’s daughter, Lucy (1763 – 1852), who married James Andrews of Essex, the Chebacco Parish of Ipswich, in 1788.

“Memoirs of Alfred Presson (1838 – 1913) of Gloucester, Massachusetts”, New England Historic Genealogical Register, 18:3

This family is not recorded in the Great Migration series nor in Martin Hollick’s book New Englanders in the 1600s.  My sources were town records, church records, vital records and town histories.
