Agnes Hunking, daughter of Mark Hunking and Mary Leavitt, was born about 1693 and died 10 October 1728 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  She married Edward Sherburne on 25 July 1716.  He was the son of Capt. John Sherburne and Mary Cowell.    Agnes's father, Mark Hunking, was the Chief Justice of New Hampshire from 1712 - 1729.  She had two daughters, Marie and Sarah, both baptized at the South Church.

Agnes's husband, Edward Sherburne, is my 1st cousin 10 generations removed.  His father, Captain John Sherburne is my 9th great grand uncle.  I descend from John's brother, Captain Samuel Sherburne (1638 - 1691).

Ambrose Gibbons (my 11^th great grandfather) was involved with John Mason as early as 1620 as part of his plan to settle northern New England.  He was an early settler in Maine, and one of the first settlers in the Piscataqua Region.  In 1630 he arrived aboard the ship Warwick with Roger Knight and Thomas Spencer. Their wives arrived the next year.  He was first granted land at Sanders Point (Newcastle) in 1634, and then he removed to Oyster River (Durham, New Hampshire).   I have another ancestor, Alexander Gould, who lived in the Newcastle, Maine area until 1672.  http://nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com/2011/10/surname-saturday-gould.html

According to Anderson in his Great Migration series, Ambrose Gibbons was well educated, and many letters survived that he sent back and forth to Mason in London.  The “Gibbons Papers” describe to John Mason a detailed account of life in New England, and many forgeries of letters exist.  You can see many of these letters in the New Hampshire Provincial and State Papers and in the Records of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, 1628 – 1686.

Gibbons built the “Great House at Newichawannock”, which was a garrison on the South Berwick, Maine side of the Piscataqua River.  He was succeeded as steward of the region by Humphrey Chadbourne.  The settlement did not flourish, and demands from London for goods and trade items were not met with success.  Ambrose Gibbons’ will bequeathed his entire estate to his grandson Samuel Sherburne (my 9^th great grandfather), with 21 pounds each to his other grandchildren Elizabeth, Mary, Henry, John, Ambrose, Sarah and Rebeckah. 

His only child, Elizabeth Gibbons (1620 – 1667) married Henry Sherbourne as his first wife.

Generation 2: Rebecca Gibbons, born about 1620 in England, died 3 June 1667 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire; married 13 November 1637 to Henry Sherborne as his first wife.  He was the son of Joseph Sherborne and Amy Cowelln, baptized on 28 March 1611 in Oldham, Hampshire, England, and died before 7 December 1680 probably on the Isles of Shoals, New Hampshire.  Eleven children.

Generation 3:  Samuel Sherburne, born a twin on 4 August 1638 in Portsmouth, died 4 August 1691 in Casco Bay, Maine; married on 15 December 1668 in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Love Hutchings, daughter of John Hutchins and Frances Unknown.  She was born 16 July 1647 in Newbury, Massachusetts and died February 1739 in Kingston, New Hampshire.  Ten children.

I descend twice from the famous Reverend Stephen Bachiler of Hampton, New Hampshire.  My first Batchelder line descends from his son Nathaniel (1590 – 1630) down to my great grandmother Carrie Maude (Batchelder) Allen (1872 – 1963).  My second Batchelder line descends from daughter Ann Batchelder (b. about 1602) who married John Sanborn.   Their son, John Sanborn, Jr.(my 9^th great grandfather)  was about age fifteen when he came to the New World in 1632 with his grandfather and two brothers.  His father arrived in New England at a later date, and his mother perhaps never came to America and died in England. 

John Sanborn, Jr. received his house lot and land in 1640 in Hampton, New Hampshire.  In 1645 he received another grant of land.  He is in the court records frequently for selling and buying land, witnessing documents and for suits against his neighbors for trespassing.  In 1650 John Sanborn, Jr. was first elected a selectman, and held that position several more times over the years.  He served as a Lieutenant in King William’s War (1689).   When he died in 1692 the inventory of his estate was recorded by his neighbors, amounting to 294 pounds and 14 shillings.

John Sanborn married first Mary Tuck and had eleven children. Then he married Margaret Page, the widow of William Moulton, and had my 8^th great grandfather, Jonathan Sanborn (1672 – 1741).  He married Elizabeth Sherburne in 1692, had twelve children and removed to Kingston, New Hampshire.

Generation 1: John Sanborn, son of John Sanborn and Ann Batchelder, born about 1620 in Brimpton, Berkshire, England and died 10 October 1692 in Hampton, New Hampshire; married first to Mary Tuck; married second to Margaret Page, daughter of Robert Page and Lucy Warde, widow of William Moulton. 

Generation 2: Jonathan Sanborn, son of John Sanborn and Margaret Page, born 25 May 1672 in Hampton, died 20 June 1741 in Kingston, New Hampshire; married on 4 February 1692 in Hampton to Elizabeth Sherburne, daughter of Samuel Sherburne and Love Hutchings. She was born 5 February 1672 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  Twelve children.

Generation 3: Margaret Sanborn, born 20 March 1698 in Hampton; married on 9 January 1714 in Kingston to Moses Sleeper, son of Aaron Sleeper and Elizabeth Shaw. He was born 22 February 1685 in Hampton, and died 23 January 1754 in Kingston.  They had fifteen children born in Kingston.

Generation 4: Hepzibah Sleeper, born 24 March 1742 in Kingston; married in 1760 to Samuel Lane, son of Samuel Lane and Elizabeth Blake.  He was born in 1741 and died 15 January 1822 in Hampton Falls.  Nine children.

Generation 5: Sarah Lane, born 24 March 1769 in Hampton Falls, died 27 February 1819 in Pittsfield, New Hampshire; married Elisha Batchelder, son of David Batchelder and Elizabeth Swett.  He was born 10 June 1763 in Hampton Falls, and died 11 October 1813 in Pittsfield. Four children.

Generation 6: Jonathan Batchelder, born about 1800 in Hampton, died before 4 November 1847 at the Concord State Asylum; married on 11 February 1822 in Belmont, New Hampshire to Nancy Thompson.  She was born about 1804 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire and died after 1847.  Two children.

Generation 7: George E. Batchelder, born 13 August 1822 in Chichester, New Hampshire, died 3 April 1848 in Chichester; married 7 September 1845 in South Boston, Massachusetts to Abigail M. Locke, daughter of Richard Locke and Margaret Welch.  She was born 10 September 1825 in South Boston, and died 15 January 1888 in Chichester.  Two children.

Generation 8: George E. Batchelder, born 8 October 1848 (posthumously), died 28 July 1914 in Cambridge, Massachusetts; married on 28 October 1869 in Chichester to Mary Katharine Emerson, daughter of George Emerson and Mary Esther Younger.  She was born 25 December 1847 in South Boston, and died 23 April 1932 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Nine children.

Generation 9: Carrie Maude Batchelder, born 22 September 1872 in Chichester, died 21 January 1963 at the Sea View Convalescent and Nursing Home in Rowley, Massachusetts; married on 1 November 1892 in Essex, Massachusetts to Joseph Elmer Allen, son of Joseph Gilman Allen and Sarah Burnham Mears.  He was born 24 September 1870 in Essex, and died 12 March 1932 at the Masonic Home in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.  Five children.

Generation 10: Stanley Elmer Allen, born 14 January 1904 in Cambridge, died 6 March 1982 in Beverly; married on 14 February 1925 in Hamilton, Massachusetts to Gertrude Matilda Hitchings, daughter of Arthur Treadwell Hitchings and Florence Etta Hoogerzeil.  She was born 1 August 1905 in Beverly, and died 3 November 2001 at the Pilgrim Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Peabody, Massachusetts. Surname Saturday ~ HUTCHINGS of Haverhill, Massachusetts

HUTCHINGS

John Hutchings was a carpenter of unknown origin who lived in Essex County, Massachusetts.   He may be the “John Hutchinson”, a carpenter and passenger on the ship Bevis which carried many Newbury settlers to Boston in 1638, but there is no proof.  In 1659 – 60 John Hutchins built a meeting house in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where an Enoch Hutchins also lived. Enoch removed to Kittery, Maine where there were two other settlers named David Hutchins and Thomas Hutchins.  There is no proof of kinship with these other local HUTCHINS settlers, but worth exploring!

 John Hutchins gave his age as about 65 in a deposition in 1669. John lived first in Newbury where his son Joseph’s birth is recorded.  He was one of the original 91 grantees of Newbury.   He signed his will “I. H.” in 1674, so he was probably not literate.   His will mentions his children by name.

John’s wife was Frances, another person of unknown origin. We don’t know her maiden name.  [See the article below by Janet Ireland Delorey which proves she was not Frances Alcock] She appears in a 1653 record for being fined for wearing a silk hood and scarf “above the ordinary rank”.  In 17^th century New England, according to the Sumptuary Laws Against Excess of 1651, it was forbidden to wear “intolerable excess and bravery in dress” above your social station in life.

My 10^th great grandfather, Henry Sherborne,  was baptized in Odiham, Hampshire, England as the son of Joseph Sherburne.  Henry came to New England aboard the James in 1632.  He was a ferryman and tavern keeper in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  He was listed as a church warden at Strawberry Bank and he served as the clerk of the county court, and held many other offices in Portsmouth, including selectman.   His brother John was in New England by about 1642.

On 13 November 1637 he married Rebecca Gibbons, the daughter of Ambrose Gibbons, and had eleven children.  He married second to Sarah, the widow of Walter Abbott (my 8^th great grandparents).   In 1668 Henry was in court for beating his wife, Rebecca, and she was also fined for “beating her husband & breaking his head”. 

There is no known death date for Henry Sherborne, but on 7 December 1680 when he failed to appear in court his daughter Mary said “[m]y father Henry Sherborned died about the year ’80 or ’83.  His death we was not sensible of”.   In 1671 he was in court with his new wife, Sarah, for “disorderly living and fighting”.   There are many lawsuits and fines in the court records for Henry Sherborne for fighting and lawsuits against his neighbors for numerous complaints.

In the New Hampshire Provincial Papers is a document which names Henry’s son, Samuel, my 9^th great grandfather, who was granted a parcel of land for “taking into custody & Christian keeping of the said Henry Sherburne’s daughter Rebecca Sherburne (who is both dumb & wanting of understanding)”.    Samuel was with the military sent to Maine during King Philip’s War in 1691.  He was “killed by the heathen” at Casco Bay.  His last child was born after his death.

Henry’s daughter, and twin to Samuel, Elizabeth, married Tobias Lear, ancestor of the Tobias Lear (1762 – 1816) who was secretary to George Washington.   Tobias Lear's third wife was a Dandridge, a relative of Martha Washington.  He died in George Washington's house in Philadelphia.

Stephen Bachiler, my 11^th great grandfather,  graduated from St. John’s College in Oxford, England in 1585 and became the vicar of the Church of the Holy Cross and St. Peter in Wherwell, Hampshire, England.  He was a “non-conformist” and was dismissed from his church.  In 1608 he went to Leyden, Holland with the separatists.  He came to New England on 5 June 1632 on board the ship William and Francis.  He was over 70 years old at the time, and traveled with some of his grandchildren.   Of his own children, only two daughters, Theodate Hussey and Deborah Wing, later came to New England.

First he went to Lynn, where he was the first minister, from August 1632 until 1636.  Then he was in Yarmouth, on Cape Cod, in 1637 and Newbury in 1638.  From 1638 until 1641 he lived at Hampton, New Hampshire where he founded another church.  He separated from his wife, Mary, and asked the court for a divorce, and then, about age 93, he left for England.  The court records in York show her being branded with the letter A on 15 October 1651, for adultery.  The Reverend Bachiler died nearly 100 years old in London and was buried on 31 October 1656.

Another one of my 9^th great grandfathers, Rev. Samuel Skelton (1623 – 1695), the first minister at Salem, Massachusetts, said of Rev. Bachiler “Little has come down to us concerning him,  owing, it is said, to the fact that he differed about clerical associations and other subjects from most of the principal persons in Massachusetts."   He was a follower of the “Old Puritan” religion, and the new 17^th century form of Puritanism in the New World was different from the Jacobean form.  Perhaps this is why he wandered around New England and settled in New Hampshire, away from the Puritan authorities.

Stephen Batchelder, born 1560 in Wherwell, Hampshire, England, died about 31 October 1656 in London, England; married first to Ann Bate, about 1586 in Wherwell, (mother of 10 children and I descend from two of them); married second to Christian Weare on 2 March 1624 in Abbotts Ann, Hampshire, England; married third to Helena Unknown, widow of the Rev. Thomas Mason on 26 March 1627 in Abbotts Ann;  married fourth to Mary Unknown, widow of Robert Beedle,  in 1648 in Beedle Wherwell, Hampshire, England. 

Lineage A:

Generation 2: Nathaniel Batchelder, born about 1590, died 1630 in the Netherlands; married to Hester Mercer, born about 1602 in Ypres, Belgium, died before 1631 in the Netherlands, mother of five children.  She was the daughter of Jan LeMercier and Jeanne LeClerc of Normandy, France.

Generation 3: Nathaniel Batchelder, born about 1630 in England, died 1710 in Hampton, New Hampshire; married on 10 December 1596 to Deborah Smith, daughter of John Smith and Deborah Parkhurst.  She was born before 1645 at Edgartown, Massachusetts on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, and died 8 March 1676 in Hampton, New Hampshire.  Nine children, and I descend from two of them.  He married second to Margery.  He did not come to New England, but some of his children did settle there.

Lineage A1:

Generation 4: Nathaniel Batchelder, born 24 December 1659 in Hampton, died about 1745 in Hampton Falls; married in 1685 in Hampton to Elizabeth Foss, daughter of John Foss and Mary Berry.  She was born in 1666 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and died in 1746. Nine children.

Generation 5:  Josiah Batchelder, born 1 July 1695 in Hampton, died 9 October 1759 in Hampton Falls; married on 31 January 1723 to Sarah Page, daughter of Francis Page and Hannah Nudd.  She was born 18 October 1698 and died in May 1781.  Six children.

Generation 6: David Batchelder, born 13 January 1736 in Hampton Falls, died 11 March 1811 in Hampton Falls; married on 24 July 1760 in Hampton Falls to Elizabeth Swett, daughter of Benjamin Swett and Elizabeth Norton.  She was born 1742 in Hampton Falls, and died 12 August 1769.  Five children.  David married second to Mary Emery on 1 January 1771 in Newbury, Massachusetts and had eight more children.

Generation 7:  Elisha Batchelder, son of David Batchelder and Elizabeth Swett, born 10 June 1763 in Hampton Falls, died 11 October 1813 in Pittsfield, New Hampshire; married Sarah Lane, daughter of Samuel Lane and Hepzibah Sleeper.  She was born 24 March 1769 in Hampton Falls, died 27 Feb 1819 in Pittsfield.  Four children.  Three children. 


NOTE 10 September 2018 -  The generations below do not descend from Elisha Batchelder.  Jonathan Batchelder, my 4th great grandfather, is the son of Nathaniel Batchelder (1732 - 1778) and his wife Mary Longfellow (1735 - 1814). 

Generation 8:  Jonathan Batchelder, born about 1800 in Hampton, died before 4 November 1847 at the Concord State Asylum, Concord, New Hampshire; married on 11 February 1822 in Belmont, New Hampshire to Nancy Thompson.  She was born about 1804 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, and died after 1847 in Warner, New Hampshire.  Two children.

Generation 9:  George E. Batchelder, born 13 August 1822 in Chichester, New Hampshire, died 3 April 1848 in Chichester; married on 7 September 1845 in South Boston, Massachusetts to Abigail M. Locke, daughter of Richard Locke and Margaret Welch.  She was born 10 September 1825 in South Boston, and died 15 January 1888 in Chichester.  Two children.

Generation 10:  George E. Batchelder, born 8 October 1848 in Chichester, died 28 July 1914 in Cambridge; married on 28 October 1869 in Chichester to Mary Katharine Emerson, daughter of George Emerson and Mary Esther Younger.  She was born 25 December 1847 in South Boston, and died 23 April 1932 in Roxbury, Massachusetts.  Nine children.

Generation 11:  Carrie Maude Batchelder, born 22 September 1872 in Chichester, died 21 January 1963 at the Sea View Convalescent and Nursing Home, Rowley, Massachusetts; married on 1 November 1892 in Essex, Massachusetts to Joseph Elmer Allen, son of Joseph Gilman Allen and Sarah Burnham Mears.  He was born on 24 September 1870 in Essex and died 12 March 1932 at the Masonic Home in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.  Five children.

Generation 4: Abigail Batchelder, born 28 December 1667 in Hampton, died 14 November, 1736 in North Hampton; married on 4 November 1689 in Hampton to John Dearborn, son of Henry Dearborn and Elizabeth Marrian.  He was born 10 October 1666 in Hampton, died 22 November 1750 in Hampton. Eight children.
