ROPER

This is a new blog post on my 10th great grandfather, Walter Roper (1614 - 1680), an early settler at Hampton, New Hampshire and Ipswich, Massachusetts.  Walter Roper’s origins are unknown.  He was born about 1614 and he was a carpenter.  He was given a grant of land in Hampton, New Hampshire in June 1640 [Documents and Records relating to the Province of New Hampshire Volume 1, page 152].  In 1642 he became a freeman in Hampton, and served as a selectman in 1644.  Sometime in the 1640s he removed to Ipswich, Massachusetts.

In the name of god amen, I Walter Roper of Ipswich in Newengland being at this present time of perfit understanding & memory though weake in body comiting my soull into the hands of almighty god & my body to deasent buriall in hope of Resorection to eternal life by the power & merit of Jesus Christ, my most mersyfulle savior & redemer, doe thus dispos of the temporal estate that god hath graciasly given me.

Imprimis I give to Susan my wiffe the bed she layeth on with all that belongeth too it, with liberty to dispose of it as she pleaseth amongst my Children at her death; my will is that my sonn John shall maintaine my wiffe Conveniantly Comfortable in diet & Clothis;

& also that my wiffe shall have haife the fruit of my orchard, & also the use of the roome she now lodgeth in which is the parlor, & also the use of the rest of the rooms of the hous that I leave to my sonn John for her nesesary ocations, & if it shall faale out that my wiff doth not like her waye of living, then my will is that my wiffe shall have the use of my household goods, alonge with my sonn John; & allso my sonn John Shall maintaine her one Cow & four sheep, winter & somer, & if any one of th¹¹¹ miscary, he to put another in the roome of it; also to Kepe her one hogg yearly & also to find her nessesary firewood and a horse for her necessary use, & also paye to her therre pounds a yeare, one haife in wheet & mault, the other half in Indian corn, all marchantable, all which she shall injoye so longe as she shall remaine a widdo;

also if my wiffe shall marrye, my sonn John shall paye to my widdo fouer pounds a year, and be freed from all the particulars above expressed. I give to my sonn Nath^### [Nathaniel] four accers of marsh I bought of Nehemiah Jewet or twenty pounds in Currant pay® after my wiffes desseas, also half my Carpenters tooles at my desseas, also eight pounds, foure pounds of it to be p^### within one year after my wiffs desseas, & foure pounds foure years after my wiffes deseas. I give to my dafter Mary five pounds to be p^### one half within one yeare after my wiffes decceas, & the other haife foure years after my wiffes decceas. I give to my dafter Elizabeth five pounds to be p^### one haife one year after my wiffes decceas, & the other haife foure years after my wiffes decceas. I give to my dafter Sarah tenn pounds to be pd one haife one yeare after my wiffes decceas, & the other haife fourer years after my wiffes decceas. I give to my grandchild Elizabeth Sparks five pounds to be p^### at the age of twenty one years. I give grandchildren Susan, Margarit, Rose & Sarah Sparks twenty shillings a pecce to be p^### at the age of twenty one years.

I give my grandchild John Sparks forty shilings to be pd at the age of twenty one years.

I give my grandchild John Duch [Dutch] forty shilings to be pd at the age of twenty one years; & also to my grandchildren Elizabeth & Susan Duch [Dutch] twenty shilings apecce to be p° at the age of twenty one years.

I do apoint my loving trends John Deneson, Senr. , John Brewer, Senr. , & John Whipple, Senr. of Ipswich the overseers of this my last will & testament & I doe hereby give them power to determin any differancs that maye arise betwen my executor & any of the Legatates aforesaid abought the payments afores^###. I doe ordaine & appoint my Sonn John Roper my sole executor of this my last will & testement, to whome I give all the rest of my estate, both houses, lands & Cattle, goods of alsorts, & depts from whomsoever due unto him [&] his heyers forever. In Confirmation whereof I have heruntoe sett my hand & sealle this fivetenth of July 1680 in pressents of us This will proved in court at Ipswich the 28 of Sept 1680. To be the last will & testament of Walter Roper by the oath of Capt John Whipple & John Denison to the best [of] there knowledge and that he was of a disposeing mynd, as attest

There is no sketch of Walter Roper in the Great Migration series.  There are very brief sketches of Walter Roper listed in Savage’s Genealogical Dictionary of New England and Torrey’s New England Marriages Prior to 1700.  There is also a sketch of him Massachusetts and Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis, by Walter Goodwin Davis, Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1996, Volume III, pages 239 – 241.  There are several land transactions and lawsuits concerning Walter Roper in the Essex Quarterly Court record.  Don't forget that Hampton, New Hampshire was part of Old Norfolk County, Massachusetts at this time period, there are several records of Walter Roper in the Old Norfolk County records, too.

The first record about John Sparks dates from 24 July 1650 when “John Sparke” was apprenticed to Obadiah Wood “bisquit maker” (baker) in Ipswich, Massachusetts.  [“Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, Massachusetts”, 1911, 1:200] Obadiah Wood was married to Margaret Spark, John’s sister.  In 1664 John was a renter in half of a house owned by Thomas Bishop, an Ipswich merchant.  In this house he had a bake shop and a tavern.  When Bishop died, John had to leave this house and he bought a lot in 1671 where he set up another bakery and “ordinary” (tavern).  He received his first license to “sell beere at a penny a quart, provided he entertain no Town inhabitants in the night, nor suffer any to bring wine or liquors to be drunk in his house.”  He kept this tavern for 20 years until he sold this property to Colonel John Wainwright.  [The Early Homes of the Puritans: And Some Old Ipswich Houses, by Thomas Franklin Waters, 1997, page 49]

There is no mention of John Sparks of Ipswich in either The Great Migration series, or in the book New Englanders in the 1600s by Martin Hollick.

The first record of John Sparks is dated 24 July 1650 when he was apprenticed to Obadiah Wood “bisquit maker” in Ipswich, Massachusetts [Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, Massachusetts, 1900, Volume 1, page 200].  Obadiah Wood married Margaret, John’s sister.  In 1664 John rented half a house from Thomas Bishop of Ipswich.  On 14 February 1671 John Spark bought two acres in Ipswich for his own bakery, and an “ordinary” (tavern). 

He married Mary Roper, daughter of Walter Roper of Ipswich.  There was an early article in the 1977 issue 98, pages 1904 – 1905 of The Sparks Quarterly published by the Sparks Family Association that stated that John Sparks married Mary Sinnett of Boston.  This was reversed in issue 164, pages 4192 – 4229 when an article by Russell E. Bidlack described the will of Walter Roper that names his daughter Mary (Roper) Sparks, and her children.  See my blog post last week on the Roper family to see a transcription of that will.  Mary’s will is transcribed below from the Essex County Probate 25951, dated 9 December 1711.  She died sometime before 26 July 1712 when her son-in-law Thomas Newman was appointed executor of this will:

In the Name of God, Amen. I Mary Spark of Ipswich in the County of Essex in New England, Widow, being Weak of Body but Thro the great Goodness of God, of perfect Mind & Memory Doe make & Or Dane th⁸ & no other to be my Last Will & Testament. Commending my Immortall Soul into the hands of Almighty God, Hopeing in the Mercy of God thro the Meritts [of] Jesus Christ to have the full & free pardon of all my Sins & Resurrection unto Everlasting Life, & my Body I Comitt to the Earth when dead, to be bureyed according to the Direction of my Exer hereafter Named in a Christian, Decent Manner-and as for the small portion of Worldly Goods which I have in possesion or may be Due to me or my heirs after my funerall Charges are Defrayed, I give & Dispose of the same In Manner & form following:

Imp¹'. I Give to my Daughter, Susannah Annable, Twenty shillings out of the Legacie left me by my [brother] John Rooper in his Will W" It shall be Due.

 Item I give also my Daughter Sarah Newman twenty shillings out of th^### Legacye W¹'¹ It shall be due, given by my Brother John aforesaid.

 Item In Consideration th^### I am & am like to be More Chargeable & Troublesome To my son, Thomas Newman & my Daughter Rose Newman with whom I Now Live, I Give unto Them & Their heirs for Ever all the Rest of my Estate, Either in possesion or reversion of what Kind or Nature so ever or In whose hands It is or May be found In, as a finall a reward of the Daily Love & Service, & I Ordain my said son Thomas Newman To be sole Executor of this my Last Will & Testament. Matthew Whipple of Bocking, Essex, England left a will in 1618 naming his children.  I descend from two sons named in this will, Matthew and John.  The will was transcribed in “Genealogical Gleanings in England” The New England Historic Genealogical Society Register (October 1890) Volume 44, page 389.

"Mathewe Whipple the elder of Bocking, Essex, clothier, 19 December 1616, proved 28 January 1618.

"My capital messuage or tenement, with the yards, gardens, orchards, members and appurtenances, situate in Bradford Street in Bocking, now in the occupation of me and said Mathewe, from and after my decease shall remain to Mathewe Whippell, mine eldest son, upon condition that he shall pay or cause to be paid to my son John Whippell fourscore pounds within three months next after my decease, and to my daughter Jane thirty pounds within six months, and to my daughter Elizabeth thirty pounds within twelve months, and to my daughter Mary thirty pounds at one and twenty or day of her marriage, and to my daughter Amie thirty pounds at one and twenty or day of marriage, upon reasonable demand made by the said Jane, Elizabeth, Mary and Amye. To my daughter Amce (?) six silver spoons of the better sort, two high latten candlesticks, my biggest brass pot and three pounds six shillings and eight pence. To my daughter Johane forty shillings. To my daughter Jane two silver spoons, two pewter platters of the greater sort, one pewter candlestick, one half headed bedstedle, my best flock bed, a flock bolster, a coverlet and a pair of blankets. To my daughter Elizabeth two silver spoons, one pewter candlestick, two pewter platters of the greater sort, a half headed bedstedle, next the best, a flock bed, a flock bolster, a coverlet, a pair of blankets and the little chest which was her mothers. To my daughter Mary two silver spoons, two pewter platters and a pewter salt, a trundle bedsteadle, a flock bed, a flock bolster, a coverlet, a pair of blankets. To my daughter Amye two silver spoons, two pewter platters, a pewter salt, a trundle bedsteadle, a flock bed, a flock bolster and a pair of blankets. To my son John a joyned table and frame standing in my old parlor (and other movables). To my sister, wife of Richard Rathbone twenty shillings, To Hercules Stephens ten shillings. To my grandchildren Hercules Arthur, Margaret Arthur, Henry Caldham and Anne Caldham six shillings eight pence apiece. To the poor of Bocking twenty shillings. All the rest to my son Matthew, sole executor."

               

John Whipple came to America with Israel Stoughton in 1631, probably on the ship Mary & John.  He was the man who built the “Whipple House” still standing in Ipswich, Massachusetts and is a museum house operated by the Ipswich Historical Society.  John and his brother, Matthew, were granted two hundred acres in the part of Ipswich known as “The Hamlet” (incorporated in 1793 as the town of Hamilton). 

There is an interesting descendant, also named Matthew Whipple, who freed his slave Plato in his will of 1760:

This may satisfy whom it may concern that I the Subscriber in Consideration that my Servant Plato has been a faithful Servant that after my Death and my Wife's Death he shall be free if be desires it and if he don't he shall have Liberty to live with any of my friends whom he pleases. And I give him Liberty to live in my east Kitchen & have his feather Bed and Bedding thereto belonging & a Pot & Skillet & a Pewter Platter & Bason & Spoon & Tramel two Chairs, one Ax and one Hoe, and a Cow & he shall have good Pasture for her, and Liberty to cut bay sufficient for her, & have one Acre of Land, where it may be most convenient for him, and a Barrel of Cyder, & three Bushels of Apples a Year as long as he lives yearly & every Year, & have liberty to cut Wood lie necessarily shall want, & Barn Room for his Cow & hay & all other Priviledges necessary for him. In Case he should by any Providence be disenabled to support himself, or through old Age not able to support himself comfortably, my Heirs shall do it whatever he shall stand in need of, which is my Will.
