The Fathers Day Tree 2021

Back in 1988 we started our Fathers Day Tree tradition with a newly planted little oak tree in Londonderry on Vincent's first Fathers Day.  We have continued this tradition even after we moved to Manchester, with a newly planted group of birch trees.  Last year our daughter continued this tradition at their new home in Massachusetts.  Here is a sampling of some of the Fathers Day Tree photographs from over the years...

Father's Day Tree 2013, 25th Anniversary Edition

In 1988, on my husband's second Father's Day, we planted an oak.  Over the past 25 years this scrawny little tree has grown into a mighty oak next to our house.  It is a a Father's Day tradition that we take a photo of Father and Daughter every year next to the tree.  In   This is the newest photo, with a smattering of photos from previous years.  Our collection of photos show quite a history as the tree, people, and weather changed over time.

Our daughter was 1 year 3 months old.

During the Halloween "Snowtober" blizzard of 2011 the Father's Day Tree suffered much damage, since the leaves were still on the branches.  The heavy snow broke limbs off trees all over New Hampshire and New England, and millions of people were without power for nearly a week.  We were quite sad to see all the damage on our beloved tree.

A crew was called in the spring of 2012 to cut many of the branches off the Father's Day tree.  Despite the unexpected "pruning" the Father's Day Tree has thrived and looks great this year.  Many other trees in New England were not so lucky.

Happy Father's Day!

2012 Father's Day Tree

Every year I post something about our Father's Day Tree on this blog.  It is called the "Father's Day Tree" because we planted it in 1988, on my husband's second Father's Day.  Our daughter was just a little over one year old.  I posted photos of the tree at this link in 2010 and this link in 2011.

Last October New Hampshire suffered a big snowstorm now known as the Snowtober Storm.  This storm was devastating because it happened when our trees still had all their leaves.  The weight of the heavy, wet snow on top of the leafy branches caused many trees to lose branches, and many fell over or were damaged beyond repair.  Our Father's Day tree sustained much damage, as you can see in the photos.

We live in a condominium community that was hard hit by the storm.  Because many trees were damaged, not just our tree, they have not all been trimmed or repaired yet.  In our town, the damage was so extensive you can still see downed limbs in the forests, and many toppled trees.  We hope this tree will be trimmed this summer, and we are praying it has not sustained permanent damage.  This episode in it's life will be just like the rest of our family history that accompanies the photos of our Father's Day Tree.

UPDATE!  - A tree service arrived on June 19th, two days after Father's Day, to repair the damage by the storm.  The tree was trimmed and assessed to be in good health.  Here's to many more Father's Day photos in the future!

The Father's Day Tree

These photos were a hit last year, so I'm posting it again with a new photo at the end....  Last year I put all the photos into a Blurb book for my husband for a Father's Day gift, and the whole family enjoyed seeing the tree and the people change over the past 24 years.  If you want to see last year's post, which has almost alll the tree photos, please click on this link http://nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com/2010/06/fathers-day-tree.html
