Thomas Nudd (1629 – 1713), my 9th great
grandfather, arrived in the New World with his stepfather, Henry Down, in
1637. His widowed mother, Joan, had
married Henry Dow in Ormsby, Norlk, England on 11 February 1631, as his first
wife. Henry immigrated with his three
children, Thomas Nudd (step son), Thomas Dow and Henry Dow. He settled first in Watertown, where his
wife, and Thomas’s mother, died. Henry
Dow remarried in 1643 to Margaret Cole and removed to Hampton, New Hampshire by
1644. Henry Dow made a gift of ten acres
to Thomas Nudd “in fulfillment of a promise made to his wife at the time of
their marriage”.
There was also a Thomas Nudd who came to Hampton and married
Mary Moulton, and an Abigail Nudd who married Robert Marston of Hampton. It is not known if these other Nudd settlers
were kin to my ancestor Thomas Nudd.
Thomas Nudd married Sarah Dearborn, the daughter of early
settler Godfrey Dearborn. They had seven
children, including my 8th great grandmother, Hannah (1678 – 1751)
who married Francis Page and had ten children.
Some NUDD resources:
The New England Historic Genealogical Society Register, “The English Background of
some Early Settlers of Hampton, New Hampshire from Ormesby St. Margaret,
Norfolk” by William Haslet Jones, Volume
142, 1988, pages 263 – 266 [NUDD Family sketch}.
It is also prudent to read about Thomas Nudd and his Dow stepfamily in The Book
of Dow: Genealogical Memoirs of the Descendants of Henry Dow, by Robert
Percy Dow, 1929
