17 January 1893 ~ The Kingdom of Hawaii is overthrown

On this day in history, 17 January 1893, the Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown by the Committee of Safety, a group of American businessmen, and Queen Lili'uokalani was deposed.   Although many nations condemned their actions, including the United States, the Republic of Hawaii was in control of the islands for many years, until annexed by the United States in 1898.

This image is from the book The Passing of Liliuokalani by William C. Hodges,
published by the Honolulu Star Bulletin, 1913, page 26

This photo was taken in 1897 when she was in Boston, Massachusetts to visit her husband's family on her way to Washington, DC to petition the president.  Queen Lili'uokalani did not spend her years after the Kingdom of Hawaii in seclusion, but she continued to work tirelessly for her people to restore their rights.
