The Founders Monument on the Newbury, Massachusetts lower green is a beautiful memorial to the first settlers in town. The beautifully cast model of a ship on top of the obelisk represents the ship "Mary and John" which carried the first settlers to a landing point just south of this green. The website for the Sons & Daughters of Newbury carefully points out that the list of settlers on the back of the monument is incomplete. There are missing names on this list, and their website has the names of the heads of families who settled in Newbury previous to 1700 (see below).

I've got several ancestors on this memorial. Very proud.
ReplyDeleteI heard that the only settlers who were put on the monument are ones whose descendants helped to pay for the Monument. My direct ancestors had left the area for the wilderness of New Hampshire more than 100 years before it was built. I have about 20 of the ancestors who are on the monument in my tree and about 10 who are in my tree but aren't on the monument.
ReplyDeleteVery nice entry Heather. Thanks for linking to it in the Sons and Daughters group.
