I was at the Laurel Hill Cemetery looking for other ancestors, but I happened to see this impressive family plot at the top of the hill. I drove up and parked, and I just HAD to get out and take some photos. It was only later that I noticed the surname - GREENWOOD
If you check Google images you will see several photos of
Jenny Greenwood taken over the years, and she has often been photographed
with different flowers, toys, and even crowns and tiaras on her head.
JENNY
DAUGHTER OF
THOMAS T. AND MARTHA J. GREENWOOD
BORN FEB. 22, 1851
WENT TO HEAVEN AUG 4. 1862
SOME OF HER LAST WORDS,
"I SEE YOU NOT, MOTHER, FOR DARKNESS AND NIGHT
ARE HIDING YOUR DEAR LOVING FACE FROM MY SIGHT,
BUT I HEAR YOUR LOW SOBBINGS. DEAR MOTHER, GOODBYE!
THE ANGELS ARE READY TO BEAR ME ON HIGH.
I WILL WAIT FOR YOU THERE. BUT O, TARRY NOT LONG,
LEST GRIEF AT YOUR ABSENCE SHOULD SADDEN MY SONG."

Son of
Thomas T. & Martha
Greenwood
Born Dec. 3, 1952
Died Aug. 7, 1853
Thomas T. Greenwood was born about 1825 in Watertown, Massachusetts, son of Miles Greenwood and Sarah Unknown, and died 4 March 1871 in Reading, Massachusetts. He married Martha J. Munroe, daughter of Andrew Munroe and Mary Beers. She was born about 1824 in Reading, and died 16 October 1886 in Reading. Three children.
1. Jenny M. Greenwood, born 22 February 1851 and died 4 August 1862 in South Boston of measles.
2. Thomas Munroe Greenwood, born 3 December 1852 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, died 7 August 1853 of cholera infantum.
3. Martha J. Greenwood, born 23 February 1857 in Boston, died 3 August 1862 in Boston of measles.
Martha J. Munroe is the daughter of Andrew Munroe, III and Mary Beers. She is my first cousin, 4 generations removed. Her father, Andrew Munroe (1789 - 1868) , is the brother to Luther Simonds Munroe (1805 - 1851), my 3rd great grandfather.
I had photographed this tombstone because it was so interesting, and then decided to research it because of the Greenwood surname, which occurs in my family tree several times in early Boston. I was never able to trace the parents of Thomas T. Greenwood (above) past his death record which names his parents as Miles Greenwood and Sarah of Watertown, Massachusetts. However, I was surprised to find that Martha Greenwood, his wife, had her parents listed as Andrew Munroe and Mary of Danvers, Massachusetts. Since I am decended of Andrew Munroe I and Andrew Munroe II of Danvers, it was easy to find the genealogical connection.

If anyone knows more information on Miles Greenwood and Sarah, please pass it on!

A family plot full of respect and feeling. Jenny's sister Martha seems to have died the day before.
ReplyDeleteIt appears they both caught measles together. Sad.
