My daughter had my husband "borrow" a recipe card out of my files, which she scanned. It is a precious recipe written in my mother's own handwriting for our favorite coffee cake. This sour cream coffee cake is a special treat in our family, and at Christmas we all make it with red and green maraschino cherries on top. My grandmother used to make this recipe, too. The original recipe card is very stained and worn. My daughter had an Etsy artist wood-burn the recipe onto a wooden cutting board, using the scan of the original recipe card.
Imagine the possibilities You can take a favorite family recipe and create one of these treasures, too. The recipe could be something that has been passed on for generations, or a favorite recipe from the "old country". It is not only a great Christmas gift, but would make a lovely Mother's Day or wedding shower gift.
I looked on Etsy.com and there are several artists there offering the same service, to reproduce recipe cards on wooden cutting boards. I don't know which one my daughter used, but all of them look similar. If you are a wood-burn artist perhaps you can reproduce this handicraft yourself with a scanned image of a hand written recipe.
I plan on hanging this board on my kitchen wall. It's too precious to use as a cutting board!

What a beautiful and thoughtful gift. This will make a wonderful, enduring keepsake for generations!
ReplyDeleteThis is so very cool! I love it! I agree to precious to use as a cutting board but what an awesome wall hanging!
ReplyDeleteThis a a great idea! What a wonderful gift!
ReplyDeleteOh Heather! This is amazing!! What a treasure!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful gift - I can't wait to find one of my mother's or grandmother's to use for gifts!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome, creative gift! I know you will treasure it forever! What is it about seeing our ancestor's handwriting that just thrills us so???
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspired gift ...thanks for sharing ...must look into these for gifts.
ReplyDeleteHeather, this is really a great wedding gift, and the back side could be used for cutting and the front for hanging the recipe up. Susi
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the great comments! I knew it would be worth sharing with everyone. Susi, you are absolutely correct, I forgot about using the back side. It would be great for serving cheese and crackers, too. Or a slice of Mom's coffee cake! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE this idea! I have recipes in my grandmother's handwriting that all of the family uses over and over again. I know what my daughters are getting for Christmas next year!
ReplyDeleteOh that is a good idea! I have several recipes written in my grandmother's distinctive back slant that would make excellent gifts.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Your daughter is very creative. I'm already thinking about which of my grandmother's recipe to have this done with.
ReplyDeleteAny chance you can find out which person on etsy your daughter used? Such a great idea!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter was not thrilled with the person she used because of poor customer service, so I hate to endorse that person, although the finished product was beautiful. I noticed there were several on etsy, so you can try contacting all of them to see which one you prefer.
DeleteI want this!! But I couldn't find anyone on Etsy. If anyone has a name of someone doing this, please post it!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a keepsake!!
Donna, type "recipe cutting board" into the search bar and you will get dozens of choices. I don't know which exact one did my cutting board, but there are lots of similar and lots of nice variations. I'll ask my daughter which one she used.
DeleteHeather, duh, thank you! I of course didn't think of that. It would be helpful to know who your daughter used since she wasn't real thrilled and I will stay away from that one. I'm excited to do this. I have a wonderful old recipe from my grandma's handwriting that I would like to give to each of my cousins! Maybe about 12 of them. Should be a nice little cost from one of the artsy people!! Thanks again!
DeleteDonna, I have a possible local business here in Derry, NH to produce these. I'm trying out some handwriting samples on maple boards soon with this maker. If all goes well I will put up photos and links to this manufacturer on my blog. You can see samples of their work at this link (but remember we haven't "tested" the handwritten text yet) http://www.precisionlaserengravingllc.com/ Some great ideas have rolled in on FB about wedding invitations, signatures, etc. Wouldn't grandpa's signature look great on a glass beer mug, or granny's letter on granite?
DeleteThe vendor was http://www.etsy.com/shop/3DCarving
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion: print the other way so you can hang the cutting board and read the recipe so it works at as a decorative item. Brilliant idea.
ReplyDeleteHere's a link to a vendor that does this. Etsy said that they have a 99% approval for customer service, so maybe it's a different vendor than the one your daughter used?

Or for $12 you can get a wood burning pen from michaels and a bamboo cutting board from Ross or Marshall's and give it a go. Might not be as perfect, but hey, you did it yourself! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Homemade, and also a loved one's handwriting! Perfect!
DeleteLove it...and thanks to the other posters for the tips of printing it the other way for hanging and using the back of it for cutting! I hate to give a gift that someone "won't " use because they don't want to mess it up!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any recipes handwritten from my mother or grandmother. I like this idea very much. I going to start a new tradition with my family and make one with my favorite handwritten recipe. I think I would include the process I used to create it so they can create their own for their families. What a fabulous idea for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI have wood burned before, but I bet it could be done by someone that laser cuts on wood. My cousin has a diet that does things like this, I'll check with him if it could show their handwriting!
ReplyDeleteWas wondering how the Derry local business worked out with the recipe on wood
ReplyDeleteI live in NH and want to get this done for my daughter for her bridal shower
Thank you!
